  2. What are “parts of speech”? • Every word in the English language can be classified into one of the following categories: • Noun • Pronoun • Verb • Adjective • Adverb • Preposition • Conjunction • Interjection

  3. Return to the pretest Can you complete/change any part of section #1? Use a different color!

  4. One word, multiple parts of speech… • Some words in the English language can be more than one part of speech. • Ex: “grade” as a verb  The teacher gradedthe summer reading tests in red ink. “grade” as a noun I earned a high gradeon the summer reading test.

  5. Homework: Words used as multiple parts of speech assignment. Due Friday.

  7. Verb • Definition: Expresses an action or a state of being • Examples: • Naomi attended a bird’s funeral. • Zach Powers is a bully. • Cap waslivingat Garland. Three Types of Verbs: • 1. Action • 2. Linking • 3. Helping(always used in a verb phrase)

  8. Noun • Definition: A person, place, thing, or idea • Examples: • Capricorn Andersonis a boy. • Hugh received many wedgies. Two types of nouns: • 1. common • 2. proper

  9. Pronoun • Definition: Takes the place of a noun • Examples: • He was elected 8th grade class President. • We saw himdoing tai chi on the lawn.

  10. Adjective • Definition: Modifies a noun or a pronoun • Examples: • Cap has messyhair. • Sophie received abeautifulbracelet. One type of adjective:articles (a, an, the)

  11. Adverb • Definition: Modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb • Examples: • Rain clumsily fell off of a ladder. • Zach is very mean to his peers.

  12. Preposition • Definition: Shows the relationship of a noun or pronoun to another word • Examples: • Darryl knocked Cap to the ground. • Mrs. Donnelly used to live at Garland Farms.

  13. Conjunction • Definition: Joins words or groups of words • Examples: • Pizza andtelevision were new to Capricorn. • Cap was bullied, but he did not seem to realize it. • One type of conjunction:coordination conjunctions • Remember the coordinating conjunctions with this acronym: FANBOYS (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so)

  14. Interjection • Definition: Expresses emotion and has no grammatical relation to the rest of the sentence • Examples: • No, Garland Farms has been sold. • Wow! Cap is not dead!
