  2. An elephant and it’s rider The rider represents our thoughts, will and rational decision making ability. The elephant represents our emotions, feelings and desires. The rider can get the elephant to go where he wants for a while, but he has limited strength compared to the elephant. Ultimately the rider has little control over the elephant and when he gets tired the elephant wanders wherever it pleases.

  3. Three experiments Clarify the goals. What are you actually going to do? 1. Direct the rider What looks like resistance is often a lack of clarity. Will power is a limited resource. Use pleasure and pain to motivate. 2. Motivate the elephant What looks like laziness is often exhaustion. 3. Clear the path What looks like a people problem is often a situation problem. Avoid the triggers and habits that set off the bad behaviour.

  4. Motivating the elephant: Pleasure & pain Most of our actions in life are motivated by pleasure and pain. We avoid pain and pursue pleasure. We can use these strong internal instincts to leverage our behaviour and make changes to our lives. It may seem counter-intuitive but we need to learn how to focus on the pain, not just on the pleasure in our behaviour.

  6. Setting Smart Goals Specific, Simple, Succinct. One line if possible. One sentence. Measurable. Set specific targets and measurable outcomes. Attractive, Accountable. State them as if they had happened. Realistic, Relevant. Reach, but not too far. Time Frame. When you are going to achieve this goal?
