  1. How Did You Do That?(Setting Up UPK to Work For You) Robin Reid USM PeopleSoft Conference June 8, 2007

  2. Deploying UPK • Multi-User vs. Single User Setup • Help Menu Integration (HEMI) • Publishing…to Paper, Player, Help Menu • UPK Player…Through Application or Direct? • UPK for Training…Standalone or Instructor Led? • OnDemand Personal Navigator at UMB

  3. As Time Allows… • How long did it really take to develop? • One take on estimating resources • Using UPK to train the trainer • Using UPK’s Know It! Mode

  4. Multi-User vs. Single User Setup • Multi-User • Core UPK Developer files are installed on shared drive • Developers save to same location • Developers can access each other’s work as needed • Single User • All Developer files are installed on local PC • Developers save to same or different drive • Developers can access only their own files

  5. Multi-User vs. Single User Setup • Publishing requires communication and coordination with either setup • The chance of error exists with either setup…the errors just vary • Standards are important with either setup

  6. Multi-User vs. Single User Setup • Thinking it through… • Who & how many will develop? • Are developers in one department or across campus? • Are they connected by a WAN or a LAN? • LAN performance beats WAN for Multi-user set-up • Can they “play well together in the sandbox“? • Who will coordinate publishing Player, paper files? Same person for all applications?

  7. Help Menu Integration (HEMI) • PeopleSoft Help link can be set to display a list of relevant UPK recordings when a user requests help from a page within the application • Instructions are included on UPK CD or download (reference docs) • Increases value of UPK to users…learn from the files…practice with the files…get help from the same files

  8. Publishing:Paper, Player, Help Menu • Communication and coordination are keys to success • Create clear documentation of all steps and who’s responsible and get feedback & sign off from all involved • Decide who will be responsible to publish • Consider a publishing schedule • Actual steps will vary depending on a number of variables including multi/single user setup

  9. Accessing the UPK Player:Through PeopleSoft or Direct? • Either way will work, either way is easy • Consider user needs • In this case, more can be better… • Give users the URL • Link from other web pages • Include link on Campus Portal • From Help link within application

  10. UPK for Training: Standalone or Instructor Led? • Make choice early…either way can work, but development differs • UMB developed for use in classroom • Instructor presentation complements UPK and provides additional information, documents, updates • Developing for standalone requires clear, detailed explanations

  11. UMB and OnDemand Personal Navigator • Technology backbone for User Productivity Kit • Adopted UPK-like training as standard because UMB users responded so well to UPK • UPK license limits use to Oracle or related applications • Purchased OnDemand licenses • Used to create materials for Banner student and COEUS grants pre-award systems • Outlook training?
