Resolution Dependence of Model Physics Using the Separate Physics & Dynamics Experiment (SPADE) • Objective • Develop the SPADE method to determine each model component’s contribution to the overall model’s resolution dependency • Approach • Implement a multi-grid capability in the Weather Research & Forecasting (WRF) model to enable running specific physical processes at an alternate resolution • Use new capability to systematically analyze selected physics behavior across a range of grid spacings • Apply SPADE to study cloud microphysics from global and mesoscale models to compare their resolution dependence SPADE’s methodology complements a traditional workflow for identifying resolution dependence by isolating specific model components using a multi-grid approach. Impact • Understanding resolution dependence, and how to control it, will enable the use of new multi-resolution global models • The Morrison microphysics from WRF has stronger resolution dependence than the Morrison-Gettelman microphysics from the CAM5 model.
