  1. LEBANESE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY AMICAL Meeting #2 June 1-3, 2005 DDS/ILL 1999-2005 By SAWSAN HABRE

  2. REASONS BEHIND PROVIDING DDS/ILL SERVICE • Serials prices • Limited increase in Serials budget • Inexistence of any consortia, collaboration or cooperative agreement between academic libraries in Lebanon • Despite the increasing number of our subscribed DB we still need fulltext articles not found in any of these DB.

  3. ACCESS vs. OWNERSHIP NEW COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT POLICY • CANCEL EXPENSIVE TITLES • CANCEL DUPLICATE TITLES AVAILABLE IN BYBLOS CAMPUS • CANCEL SOME TITLES AVAILABLE FULLTEXT IN SOME OF OUR SUBSCRIBED DATABASES

  4. BORROWING/LENDING POLICY • FACULTY: 50 per year • STAFF: 25 per year • STUDENTS: • GRADUATE: 25 requests per semester • UNDERGRADUATE: 10 requests per semester

  5. WHO ARE OUR SUPPLIERS? • BLL: OPENED A DEPOSIT ACCOUNT SINCE 1999. REQUESTS SENT BY E-MAIL, MATERIALS RECEIVED BY NORMAL MAIL. • AUB: ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTION ($2000) ENTITLES US TO PHOTOCOPY ARTICLES AND BORROW BOOKS (12) • UMI: SINCE 2002. ORDERS BY E-MAILS, RECEIVE MATERIALS BY MAIL.

  6. SUPPLIERS-2 • ERIC:TILL 2004, DOWNLOADING ERIC DOCUMENTS ONLY • OTHER LOCAL INSTITUTIONS, ORGANISATIONS, MINISTRIES AND UN AGENCIES DESPITE THE GROWTH OF COMMERCIAL DOCUMENT SUPPLIERS (PROQUEST, SCIENCE DIRECT…) WE STILL ORDER FROM BLL BECAUSE OF THE LOW PRICES PROVIDED. ($30 vs. $10)

  7. What are the problems that we are facing? • Incomplete citations • Users do not consult our OPAC, DB, or the Web • Requesting the same item twice • Requesting books on order • Delivery methods affecting turnaround time • Inexistence of a portal • Inexistence of a union catalog in Lebanon • Inexistence of national and public libraries in Lebanon • Number of staff; 3 ( one full-time, 2 part-timers)

  8. In order to get a broader understanding of the current use of our DDS/ILL systemIn order to provide better services to our usersWe developed a study/survey to help us in finding answers to the following questions:

  9. What is the size of the population we are serving? • What are the statistics for items requested? • What are the types of material most frequently borrowed or photocopied? • What category of users use our services? • What is the cost of DDS/ILL for a specific period? • Who are the providers that we use the most? • What is the turnaround time? • What is the age of publication of the requested material?

  10. METHODOLOGY • Measured the total number of requests for the period of 1999-2005 • Chose randomly 1500 requests that we studied in details in order to find answers to the previous questions.

  11. Population of LAU in 1999 • Students: 87% • Faculty: 7% • Staff: 6%

  12. Population of LAU in 2005 • Students: 88% • Faculty: 6% • Staff: 6%

  20. Findings of the survey Materials received/not received from BLL • 642 requests sent to BLL were received out of 754 requests (85%)

  21. Language parameter was not studied in this survey because more than 99% of the requests were for items published in English • The cost of DDS/ILL for 2004 was $ 13,016 • ($9868 are for requests from BLL)
