  1. Cultural Diversity

  2. A range of different societies or peoples with different origins, religions and traditions all living and interacting together. 'Cultural Diversity'

  3. We experience many different cultural influences. Some more subtle than others, our family background, our name, meal times, traditions…. • During mentor you will be, or have already, explored your family background, plotting this information geographically on a map. Mentor

  4. What we are about to show you, might surprise you, I have THREE questions. • What contribution do Europeans make to the cultural diversity of the world? • What FOUR simple daily luxuries would put you in the top 25% of the worlds rich list? • What % of the worlds people live on a $1.00 or less a day What does that look like on a global scale?

  5. Watch and read closely

  6. What contribution do Europeans make to the cultural diversity of the world? • 12 Europeans • What FOUR simple daily luxuries would put you in the top 25% of the worlds rich list? • food in a refrigerator, clothes in a closet, a bed to sleep in and a roof over your head • What % of the worlds people live on a $1.00 or less a day • 18

  7. Cultural Diversity is as old as history itself….. • Cultural mixing in England began with the Roman invasion. • Followed by the Saxons, Vikings, Normans. • Diversity hit its peak, with Great Britain conquering the world, taking Britishness, engineering, education and of course our beloved… cricket out to the Empire. • Of course, people from the colonies flowed back. • Not forgetting more recent settlers from the Caribbean and Europe. Context

  8. Each of these settlers brought with them different foods, fashions, languages, beliefs and lifestyles. • These have been absorbed into our culture and enrich our lives today. What impact does that have on Great Britain?

  9. The Friday / Saturday night takeaway decision? • Naming of the newest family member? (Boy, girl, dog, cat or goldfish.) • Where did you last go on holiday? • What trends are you following? Clothes, music… • What are you learning about in PSREor History? • What and where will you find work? • And who for…..? What impact does that have on YOU?

  10. We live in a country rich in cultural heritage. • Valuing our diversity is about respecting other peoples beliefs and ways of life. • Everyone is different and we should embrace differences. Valuing Our Cultural Diversity

  11. When asked if he had any difficulties working with so different many world cultures at Arsenal FC, Arsene Wenger simply replied… “Surely a garden looks better with many different coloured roses on display?” Thought for the week
