  1. Resistor Codes How to read the value of a resistor

  2. Resistance is measure in Ohms • The symbol for ohms is  • To find the resistance of a carbon resistor we must be able to read the resistor code • On each resistor there are 4 coloured bands Resistance

  3. 1 4 2 3 The 4 bands

  4. The values

  5. What do the bands mean

  6. The Fourth Band • The last band is the tolerance • This is how accurate the resistance is • This has just two possible values

  7. Example • Can you work out the value of the resistance? • What is the value of each colour?

  8. Example • Band 1 : Red = • Band 2 : Black = • Band 3 : Orange = • Value ohms

  9. Answer • Band 1 : Red = 2 • Band 2 : Black = 0 • Band 3 : Orange = 3 zeros : 000 • Value 20,000 ohms
