Forsaga 2006 – Sveitarfélög í Noregi, Gulen og Fjordane buðu fulltúrum Þingvallanefndar í heimsókn þar sem viðraðar voru hugmyndir um samstarf fornra þingstaða. 2007 – Fulltrúar frá Gulen og Fjordane heimsóttu Þingvelli og áfram rætt um formlegt samstarf umsýsluaðila fornra þingstaða. 2008 – Ráðstefna haldin í Eyvindvik í Gulen 23-24 júní undir yfirskriftinni: “Thing Sites Network in Northern Europe” Markmið ráðstefnunnar var að skoða möguleg samstarfsverkefni, finna leiðir til að styrkja slík verkefni. Ráðstefnuna sóttu fulltrúar frá Íslandi/Þingvöllum, Noregi, Skotlandi, Mön, Grænlandi og Færeyjum. 2008-2009 – Síma og netfundir milli þeirra sem sóttu ráðstefnuna og annarra sem sýndu áhuga. 2009 Ákveðið að sækja í NPP mars 2009

3. 2008 – Ályktun undirrituð í lok ráðstefnu í Eyvindvik LETTER OF INTENT The participants at the Gulating conference 2008 held on 23 and 24 June 2008, from Greenland, Iceland, the Faeroe Islands, Scotland’s Highlands and Islands, the Isle of Man and Norway wish to express the following: The parliamentary sites formed important foundations upon which to build a civil society in the Nordic region from the 9th century. The idea behind and the purpose of the conference is to build upon the old model related to the parliamentary sites around the North Sea and the North Atlantic, as a basis for historical knowledge of each other, and to work towards procuring documentation which will result in the sequential nomination of the parliamentary sites to UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The purpose of the conference is also thereby to establish new relationships connected to a cultural cooperation, administration, environmental issues, documentation and presentation and, not least, a cooperation related to sustainable tourism linked to these cultural memorials. The participants from the countries and regions who took part at the conference wish to establish a parliamentary site network, with the main aim of promoting cooperation on an historical basis, but also to focus on the potential and challenges in the region related to the above-mentioned issues in modern times. The conference participants wish also to establish ties with other parliamentary sites in the northern regions, and to take the initiative to familiarise the authorities in the respective countries and regions with the parliamentary site network. The purpose of this Letter of Intent is to establish an annual conference for the parliamentary site network, and that the participants make a commitment to work towards such conferences via their individual authorities and organisations. The 2008 conference participants wish that the next conference in 2009 be held in Iceland.

4. Aðilar að verkefninu eru frá Skotlandi, Orkneyjum, Hjaltlandseyjum, Færeyjum, Noregi og eyjunni Mön. • Í Skotlandi er Dingwall þekkt örnefni á tveimur stöðum • Á eyjunni Mön í Írlandshafi eru lög enn sögð við hátíðlega athöfn hvert sumar á stað sem heitir Tynwall.  • Í Færeyjum stendur stjórnarsetur eyjanna á Tinganesi  þeim stað í Þórshöfn, þar sem þing voru háð um aldir.  • Í Orkneyjum og Hjaltlandseyjum eru örnefni og sagnir um forna þingstaði. • Lög Gulaþings eru sögð fyrirmynd fyrstu laga á Alþingi Íslendinga á Þingvöllum árið 930.  Talið er að Gulaþing hafi verið í bænum Eyvindvik nyrst í sveitarfélaginu Gulen norðan við Bergen á vesturströnd Noregs.

5. Markmið með verkefninu er að kynna sögu þingstaða frá víkingatímanum. Nafn verkefnisins er: The THING Project - Thing Site International Networking Group Grunnhugmynd verkefnisins er að efla og auka þekkingu á sögu þingstaða. Unnið verður að því að kynna þessa arfleifð markvisst og þróa nýja og fjölbreyttari ferðaþjónustu tengda fornum þingstöðum. Verkefnið byggir á þeim þingstöðum sem kunnir eru frá víkingatímanum og eru dreifðir um þau landssvæði sem víkingar námu og byggðu. Þingstaðaverkefnið er mjög stórt og opnar á tengingar milli þeirra landa þar sem þingstaðir voru. Það opnast miklir möguleikar til að draga fram sögu héraðsþingstaða á Íslandi, kynna þá og þróa fjölbreyttari ferðaþjónustu í tengslum við þá.

6. A shared hidden heritage Ráðstefna og fyrsti vinnufundur haldinn í Hátíðarsal Snorrastofu í Reykholti 4. september
