  1. Creating TEI Questions in PowerPoint

  2. The First, Faster Way • Select View>Slide Master • Click on one of the boxes in the slide view on the left • Add “containers” for your question, which cannot be moved. These can be shapes, text boxes, or pictures • Select Slide Master>Close Master View • Select Home>New Slide • Choose the slide you created • Add text boxes that will be dragged and dropped The main issue with this method is that you are working with a slide, NOT a presentation.

  4. The Second, Better Way • Using a macro, you can drag and drop shapes, text boxes, and pictures into containers while the slide show is running • I have created different types of TEI questions, which can be found on slides following these instructions. You may change these and use these how you would like. However, you need to copy and paste the existing drag and drop items and alter them, instead of creating new ones. • If you double click on any drag and drop item, a format menu will appear. If it is a picture, it will allow you to change the picture. If it is a shape or text box, it will have a choice to “Edit Shape,” which you can change.

  6. Things You Must Do When Creating Your Own Questions • When you make your “containers” that hold the drag and drop items, group them and move them to the back. Hold down the control key, click on all containers and titles, then right click on one of the objects. Select Group. Then right click again. Select Send to Back. • When saving the presentation under a new name, you must pull down the menu under “Save as Type” and select PowerPoint Macro-Enabled Presentation.

  7. Some Handy Things to Do • Create a folder on your desktop called “TEI Pictures.” Save pictures from the Internet in the folder that you plan on using • Save the presentation as a show that students can use that will not change your original presentation. Go to Save As, type in the name, then pull down “PowerPoint Macro-Enabled Show” • Place a STOP SIGN at the end of the presentation/show in order to check the answers of a student who is working independently • Have students navigate through the slides with the arrow keys on the keyboard

  8. Before you start: • Open PowerPoint • Click Tools • Click Options • Click Security Tag • Click Macro Security • Select Medium • Close and re-open PowerPoint (you won’t have to do any of that again, but if asked click on enable macros at start-up next time)

  9. Troubleshooting • Check security settings are ‘medium’ (recommended) or ‘low’ (not recommended) – you can change these if necessary under tools, then options • Make you click ‘enable macros’ if asked
