Complicating Incident – event that gets the story started, beginning of the conflict While going to get a pail of water, Jack tripped

Conflict – struggle between opposing forces (forces that are against each other) Man vs. man (external) Man vs. nature (external) Man vs. supernatural (external) Man vs. self (internal) Internal conflict (Inside) – takes place in the mind and it’s a struggle between opposing needs/desires/emotions External conflict – takes place between a character and some outside force Conflict in “Jack and Jill”: man vs. man Jack and Jill don’t make it down the hill on their feet.

  4. Story Element Notes 4. Climax – the highest point of interest (or the most interesting part), turning point (everything will change after this) This is the highest point of the conflict. Jack’s fall to the ground breaks his crown (head) and causes Jill to tumble after him Rising Action- events in the conflict before the climax Jack tripped on his way to get water (complication) Jack fell down

Story Element Notes Falling Action- takes place after the climax and is the events leading to the resolution (or the end of the story) Jack gets up and goes home as fast as he can with a head injury 5. Resolution – ties up loose ends and is the story’s end Jack wraps his head with a bandage of brown paper and vinegar and goes to bed.
