  6. Daily Life in Early Arabia • Desert • Oasis-green area w/ water • People organized in tribes w/ a Sheikh as their leader • Bedouins-desert herders • Caravans-group of traveling merchants and animals

  7. Geography • Makkah (Mecca)-largest and richest town/ center of Islam Ka’bah-built by Ibrahim (Abraham). It is stated in the Qur'an that this was the first house that was built for humanity to worship Allah (God).

  8. Muhammad • Prophet of Islam • Born 570 AD • 610 AD angel visits him in the hills and said-”surrender to the will of Allah” and worship only Allah

  9. Allah • Islamic God • Live a good life and when the “judgment day” arrives God will reward you • Quran-holy book of Islam

  10. Muhammad’s Social Message • All people were equal • Became popular among the poor of Arabia

  11. A Controversial Message… • People should be held accountable for their actions • Good actions = rewards • Evil actions = punishment • Who might have a problem with this message?

  17. Return to Mecca: 630 C.E. • After several years of fighting Muhammad and his followers, with help of many Bedouin tribes capture the city of Mecca
