SPECIFIC PROGRAMMES - funding • Cooperation (collaborative research)9 themes: € 44.7 billion • Ideas (frontier research, European Research Council): € 11.9 billion • People (human potential, Marie Curie Actions): € 7.2 billion • Capacities (research infrastructures, research for benefit of SMEs, INCO, etc.): € 7.5 billion TOTAL (incl. JRC € 1.8 billion) = € 73.2 billion

  6. Main differences/ similarities wrt FP6 • Amount: doubling of EC research budget • 5-fold increase in Space-related budget • Duration: 7 years instead of 4 • Thematic areas: 9 instead of 7, but very similar • Instruments: same as FP6

Security and Space Protection against terrorism and crime Space-based applications at the service of the European Society Security of infrastructures and utilities Border security Exploration of space Restoring security in case of crisis Security systems integration and interoperability RTD for strengthening space foundations Security and society Security Research Coordination and structuring

  8. 9.2 Space Objectives • To support a European Space Programme focusing on applications such as GMES, with benefits for citizens and for the competitiveness of the European space industry. • This will contribute to the development of a European Space Policy, complementing efforts by Member States and by other key players, including the European Space Agency.

  9. 9.2 Space Rationale • User driven applications: benefits to public authorities and decision-makers (in fields such as agriculture, environment, fisheries, security, telecommunications, transport). • Benefits to European industry: better definition of common objectives based on user requirements and policy objectives. • Co-ordination of activities: to avoid duplications, maximise interoperability and define standards.

  10. 9.2 Space Activities (1/2) Space-based applications at the service of the European Society • GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security): user driven approach to: • development of satellite-based monitoring systems; • integration with in-situ monitoring systems; • use and delivery of GMES data and services. • Innovative satellite communication services in public application sectors (e.g. civil protection, tele-medicine). • Technologies for reducing the vulnerability of space-based services and for the surveillance of space.

  11. 9.2 Space Activities (2/2) Exploration of space • Contribution to international space exploration initiatives. RTD for strengthening space foundations • Contribution to: • Space transportation technology. • Space sciences including life in space.

  13. Conclusion • FP7 looks very promising for Space, especially GMES • Participation of SMEs will be supported:Potocnik speech on FP7, Slovenia, 18/3/2005:« …facilitate and encourage the participation of SMEs in mainstream cooperative projects »
