  1. Essentials of the self-organizing map Presenter : JHOU, YU-LIANGAuthors : TeuvoKohonen2013,NN

  2. Outlines • Motivation • Objectives • Methodology • Application • Conclusions • Comments

  3. Motivation • The self-organizing map (SOM) is an automatic data-analysis method. It is widely applied to clustering problems and data exploration in many areas . • New, very promising applications exist in bioinformatics.

  4. Objectives • The self-organizing map (SOM) principle has been used extensively as an analytical and visualization tool in exploratory data analysis . • Introduce the principle of SOM and operational processes

  5. Methodology • Find BMU • Result • Initialize • Update • Input data set The original, stepwise recursive SOM algorithm SOM operational process

  6. Methodology The original, stepwise recursive SOM algorithm

  7. Application of areas of SOM

  8. ApplicationSOMs of document collections

  9. ApplicationHuman endogenous retroviruses

  10. Conclusions • Perhaps one of the main virtues of the basic SOM algorithm is that one can compute really large mappings in reasonable time, using only personal computers. • This author strongly encourages the use of two public-domain software packages developed by the SOM_PAK Team and the SOM Toolbox Team.

  11. Comments This paper makes me a better understanding of the principle of SOM applications and processes Applications -Self organizing map
