Lunghezza: 175 km Portata: 82,1 m³/s (il volume d’acqua che passa in una sezione del fiume in un'unità di tempo) Bacino idrografico: 5550 km² (l’area topografica delimitata da uno spartiacque topografico) Altitudine sorgente: 500 m s.l.m. Sorgente: Sorgente Capo Volturno (Rocchetta a Volturno – Molise) Foce: Mar Tirreno (Castel Volturno – Campania)

  4. Il fiume ha una portata media regolare ed abbastanza elevata che si aggira intorno agli 82,1 m³/s. Tuttavia, in caso di improvvise piogge abbondanti, si possono avere brusche impennate di portata che portano spesso ad estese inondazioni (fortunatamente non troppo frequenti). Le sue acque sono impiegate per molteplici usi quali pesca, irrigazione, nautica sportiva e produzione di energia idroelettrica. La principale città attraversata è Capua, la quale era anticamente attrezzata con un porto fluviale. La vegetazione presente lungo il corso del Volturno è molto comune ( canna di palude, pioppo, salice bianco e salice rosso) mentre per quanto riguarda la fauna abbiamo esemplari di airone bianco, germano reale, tuffetto, svasso maggiore, biscia d’acqua e ramarro.
