The Monarchy Is Abolished Tensions Lead to Violence • August 10, 1792 Parisians storm Tuileries and slaughtered the king’s guards Radicals Take Control and Execute the King • Radicals called for the election of a new legislative body called the National Convention. • Suffrage, the right to vote, was extended to all male citizens • The Convention met in September 1792. They voted to abolish monarchy and establish a French Republic • Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were sentenced to death

Terror and Danger Grip France The Convention Creates a New Committee • In 1793, France was at war with all of Europe and the Convention was divided between the Jacobins and Girondins • The Convention created the Committee of Public Safety, which had 12 members that had absolute power Robespierre “the Incorruptible” • Maximilien Robespierre guided the government against counterrevolutionaries. He also wanted to abolish slavery, tolerate all religions, and believed in Rousseau’s ideas The Guillotine Defines the Reign of Terror • Robespierre was a chief architect of the Reign of Terror. Reign of Terror lasted from September 1793 to July 1794 • Robespierre was executed because he was executing too many people
