Before Even Getting to the Rubric • The information you write in your essay should: • 1st – be your own words, if even one sentence is copied from the book it is still plagiarism. • 2nd – information, facts, evidence, etc. must be accurate. If what you say is wrong, you will not earn any points on the rubric. • 3rd– don’t assume the reader (me or the AP readers) knows what you are trying to say. You MUST be clear and explicit. • 4th – you can’t earn multiple points for one sentence.

  3. Thesis Statements Examples of actual thesis statements • Examples of BADthesis statements: • There were many similarities and difference between Han China and Gupta India. • I’m going to compare the Han and Rome and tell you how the social structure are the same. • Both Han China and Classical Rome have similarities, but they also have differences. • Thesis statement must include: • Time period • Empires/civilizations • Categories that are similar and different (stating which is which) • Example of a good thesis statement: • During the classical era, Han China and Gupta India had similar social structures, however their government structures differed.

  4. Direct Comparison (DC) • A direct comparison is testing your ability to be explicit with your thoughts and not to assume that the reader understands what you are inferring. • This is not a direct comparison: • China had a centralized government. India’s government did not create an extensive bureaucracy. • Both had a similar social structure. • Direct comparisons MUST be in one sentence. You may use “both” to address a similarity, or “while” to address a difference. • For example: • Both China and India consider men as the leader of the household. Why is this not a DC? How could you make these two statements a direct comparison?

  5. Analysis • You must analyze the reason for each direct comparison you make. • Analysis = why? How? etc. • For example: • DC = Both China and India consider men as the leader of the household. • Why were men considered “leader” of the household in Chinese civilization? • Why were men considered “leader” of the household in Indian civilization? • Possible Reasons: • Confucius stressed respect for male authority within the family • Confucius stressed respect for “social superiors” • Possible Reasons: • One Indian law code stated that women worship her husband as a god. • The confinements of women were evident in Indian laws and literary works.
