  1. Did the Europeans and the Natives have a healthy relationship? By Joe-Freddy François

  2. Dear sweetheart, I am writing you this letter to tell you haw have been doing in the “New world”. When we first got there, the natives were frightening and oblivious. They were really amazed to see us because of how we looked compare to them. They were naked, but other than that they were kind to us. Their chief even gave our governor her necklace full of pearls to show that she’s friendly. Afterwards, they helped us and they gave us food until we rounded them and made them our prisoners. A lot of them got shot trying to escape and some of them died of diseases. Sincerely, Diego February 11, 1587

  3. Dear King, I am one of the missionary sent in the Pueblo village. I’ve been there for a week now and it has not been as we expected it to be. It was really hard when we first attempted to teach them our ways because they felt as though we were some crazy people living like crazy. When they were getting baptized, they revolted by throwing their arrows at us. They labeled us as lunatics. Even though these things occurred, overall we were able to get most of them to believe in the Christian faith and teach them how to use new tools and in return the taught us some skills, like techniques for growing crops. Those who continued their own religion got whipped. So your honor, how do we get those who doesn't believe to believe in the Christian faith? Sincerely, Priest, Fernando January 7, 1530

  4. Dear King Louis XIV, I know you’ve been hearing rumors and stories about how savage the natives are, but my experience differ from those. They were really friendly to us. They even helped us looking for fur. Because of all these things, we forgot to make them our prisoners. We were able to learn their language and know how to live in the wilderness of where they live. Through that they became our partners. Unfortunately, the disease that we brought with us killed most of them, which caused another native clan called Iroquois to be mad. The Iroquois were soon the enemies of the Huron. So we helped them fight against the Iroquois using our guns, and them their arrows. The gun fire made a lot of the Iroquois flee. Sincerely, Marcel December 20, 1610

  5. Dear Uya, I am writing you this letter to tell you how oblivious and confused I was about the letter that you wrote me. I find it hard to believe that the Europeans were bad to you and your people because they were kind to us and didn’t do no harm to us. All they were doing and trying to find was fur. So when we saw them, they demanded our help and we helped them. After an amount of time we taught them how to live in the wilderness of our place and our language. But, the Iroquois, another group of natives like us got mad because of the diseases the Europeans brought with them. So when the Iroquois started a war with us, they helped us fight them. If these people are really like you say they are, then I suggest you to stay calm and not try to fight them because they got guns, but instead protect yourself and your family. Sincerely, Kiche October 5, 1610

  6. Dear Diary, today I witnessed my people getting attacked by a mad group of Powhatan Tribes. I was far away when the attack happened, so I couldn't have done anything to stop them. The Tribes were in great shape, fast and strong. They wore half their head shaved and had black hair. I heard a lot of screaming from my people. It also seemed to me that they got attacked by surprise from the way I saw my people reacting to the attacked. The Tribes used short spears to make their moves. A large number of my people were killed. So, I decided to held a meeting with the people in the town to hear their thoughts on how to respond back. All of them agreed that we should conquer them instead of civilizing them. Some of them said we should attack them by surprise, others said we should burn their priorities and attack them while they hunting. John Smith June 6, 1622

  7. About the Author Joe-Freddy is 14 years old and currently lives in Hyde Park, Ma. When not writing and being a student, he spends most of his time reading and drawing. “ For me personally I found that throughout this investigation, most of the evidence supported the Natives and Europeans as having in unhealthy relationship. I say this because it seemed as though there wasn’t any kind of relationship between them and the Europeans were judgmental to the Natives and were conquering the Natives lands. This era of American history is significant because it basically defined what types of people the Europeans were back then and their ambitions and competition for land in what they called the “New World”. It was particularly useful because people learned about the relationship between the Natives and the Europeans. Through it people may learn lessons about life and not treat people the way the Europeans treated the Natives.”
