Interesting facts • People who are thin or who have a small frame, are at greater risk for osteoporosis • Men tend to develop osteoporosis 10 – 15 years later than women do, because they are generally bulkier and have more bone mass to lose. • Among those who fracture their hip, 12 to 20% die within one year after the fracture and more than 50% of the survivors are unable to return to independent living. • The word "osteoporosis" comes from the Greek words • Osteoporosis is not a condition exclusive to the elderly it can strike at any age • Caucasians and Asians have a higher risk of developing osteoporosis than other people do • an osteoporotic fracture is estimated to occur every 3 seconds.

  4. Treatments • You have to make lifestyle changes to help prevent from getting osteoporosis. You have to quit cigarette smoking, excessive alcohol intake, exercising regularly, and consuming a balanced diet with calcium and vitamin D. that will make your bones healthier and you will have a less percentage of getting osteoporosis.

What causes osteoporosis? • There are also some that you can somewhat control like • Estrogen levels • History of broken bones • Low body weight • Calcium • Vitamin D • Exercise • Smoking • Alcohol • diet Some are hereditary and the way you live. • There are some causes that u cant control like • Family history • Gender • Ethnicity

  10. Treatment • Although osteoporosis cannot be reversed it can be prevented and treated. • You can prevented by calcium and vitamin D. • there are medication that you can take to slow it down like • Evista • Forteo
