  3. BACKGROUND • French and British have long time RIVALRY • France controls St. Lawrence River, Mississippi, and Great Lakes

  4. Ohio Valley Conflict • British Colonists move into the fur trade area (Ohio River Valley) controlled by France. • English & French each make alliances with Native Americans • Algonquin fought on the French side & Iroquois fought on the British side frenchandindianwar.info

  5. Albany Plan of Union • Ben Franklin’s idea to unify the colonies against the French. • First formal proposal to unite colonies…. but defeated because it gave too much power to a central assembly.
