  2. Hsuan-yuan Chiao • Every 28 days, a ceremony is held in honor of Huangti. • Everything in this religion is celebrated for Huangti. • The biggest temple for Hsuan-yuan temple is in Tamsui.

  3. Buddhism Buddhism originated in India, but was later spread to Taiwan in the 16th century. In Taiwan there are 4.9 million individuals who practice Buddhism. Buddhism followers chant mantras and sutras, and meditate. Buddhism is the most practiced religion.

  4. Islam • In the year of 1949, thousands of Muslims went to Taiwan. This was the beginning of Islam in Taiwan • Today, if you are a Muslim living in Taiwan, it is very difficult to practice in the hectic city. • In Taiwan there are three mosques called: Kaohsiung, Taichung, and Lungkang. There are two more in Taipei.

  5. Li-ism • It was founded by Yang Lai-ju in the 17th century • It uses Chinese morals and ethics • It is a combination of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism • Although, it is a combination of those religions, the practices are mainly that of Buddhism

  6. Tenrikyo • Japanese religion • Teaches people how to abide by God’s will by gaining control of their destiny so they can have a life filled with joy • Introduced to Taiwan during the Japanese occupation • Similar to Buddhism

  7. Taoism Is the second most practiced religion in Taiwan, and it is practiced by 4.5 million people. The central idea of the religion is the fulfillment of divinity. During worship, people who follow Taoism use incenses.

  8. Catholicism Christianity was introduced to Taiwan in 1626 by Spanish influence. There are about 304,000 Taiwanese people practice Christianity. A Catholic priest and a Dominican priest introduced this religion to the people.

  9. Protestantism Protestantism was first introduced to Taiwan by Georgius Candidus of the Reformed Church of Holland. There are at least 65 sects of Protestantism, 2,700 churches, and 2,550 ministers in Taiwan.

  10. Mahikari-Kyo Mahikari-Kyo was first introduced to Taiwan in 1983, but was only registered with the Ministry in 1996. Mahikari-Kyo is originally a Japanese religion founded by Yosikazu Okada in 1959. Followers of this religionbelieve that anyone has the ability to attain healing powers by taking a three-day seminar on the Spiritual Art of Divine Light. Disciples of Mahikari-Kyo believe that happiness will be brought to the people by their teachings of the righteous law in the coming of the Holy Twenty-First Century. Since its introduction to Taiwan the religion has vastly developed and shrines are available all around the island.

  11. Tien te Chaio A combination of Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, Christianity, and Islam, Tien te Chaio inducts many principles in which disciples are supposed to folow throughout their lives.

  12. Tienti Teachings A very new religion, Tienti Teachings stresses the coexistence of the spiritual and material world along with a world of universal love.

  13. Baha'i Founded in Iran is 1844, Baha’i is a small percentage of the religion in Taiwan. It believes that the family is the foundation of society and G-d has sent messengers, like Moses, to fulfill his purpose. Baha’I temple

  14. I-Kuan Tao Even though it is a new faith, I-Kuan Toa is the third most popular religion in Taiwan today. Made to distinguish common principles underlying Taoism, Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, Judaism, and Hinduism, this religion believes the world can achieve peace and harmony through unveiling the universal truths.
