Objectives • To introduce you to GEHS leadership and staff • To review graduation requirements • To discuss career major/cluster requirements • To discuss college entrance requirements • To give overview of counseling program • To help you understand arena scheduling • To discuss next year’s schedule • To discuss GEHS extra-curricular opportunities and how your student can become involved • To give you important tips from counselors

  6. Beginning High School High school is the final transition into adulthood and the world of work as students begin separating from parents and exploring and defining their independence Students are deciding who they are, what they do well, and what they will do when they graduate

Air Conditioning / Refrigeration Computer Science Health Care Technologies Agriculture Sciences Business / Marketing Construction Technologies Drafting Technology Culinary Arts Early Childcare Professions Automotive Technology Auto Body Collision Repair Career & Technical Education CTE Courses & Labs focus on these areas: COOP Programs (work experience) are available only for Seniors enrolled in certain Career Majors.

  10. School Counselors Will work with students using assessments such as the EXPLORE, PLAN, and ASVAB and work with then in computer labs to help students set academic and career goals and determine which career pathway and major is best for them.

  11. Career Pathways Professional – students who plan to attend 4 or more years of college Skilled – students who plan to attend a technical or associate degree program Entry – students who plan to go to work immediately after high school

  12. ED=MC2 • Education decisions are often made based on the messages we communicate to the 2nd power (often and over a period of time). ARE YOU COMMUNICATING THE RIGHT MESSAGE TO YOUR STUDENT?

FACT • Only 20% of the job market NOW requires a four year degree • Most of these jobs are already filled • 60% of Job Market requires SOME training beyond high school • Today’s jobs require high level skills • Voc Tech schools expect students to already have high level knowledge in MATH, SCIENCE and ENGLISH

FACT • High Schools are doing more to make students job ready • But MORE Training is needed • Associate Degrees and Vocational Certificate programs are more likely to assure your student success. • IF a 4 YEAR college is your goal, your student MUST be competitive…honors and AP courses are a MUST!

  15. School Counselors • Will work with student in to help students in the areas of: • Academic Development • Career Development • Personal/Social Development Thru… Individual Student Planning, Groups and Classroom Guidance

  16. Career Clusters Students select a career cluster in the 8th Grade. Clusters include: Arts and Humanities Business / Marketing Engineering / Technical Health Care Human Services Science / Natural Resources

Career Majors • Greenbrier East offers several majors in each career cluster • Counselors will work with students in a variety of ways to help students select a major • Students will select a major in the 10th grade • Students may change majors as career choices change as long as their schedule permits

  18. FACT In West Virginia 62 out of 100 students enter a 4 year college. 15 earn a college degree. 7.5 get a job in their career field

  24. 10th Grade Arena Scheduling Wednesday, April 27 Incoming 10th graders will schedule all 8 classes in the GEHS Gym Students are expected to complete three practice schedules Bring three completed practice schedules and course verification form with them to GEHS

  29. 9th Grade Arena Scheduling Thursday, April 28 Incoming 9th Graders will register only for their afternoon classes: “A” Day - Blocks 3 & 4 “B” Day – Blocks 7 & 8 9th Graders will take their four core requirements each morning and will be automatically scheduled with their TEAMS

Arena How To’s YOUR STUDENT SHOULD: • Complete three practice schedules • Bring Course Verification Form and Completed Practice Schedules TO GYM • Schedule REQUIRED classes first • Go to HELP table when confused / frustrated • If schedule does not work out, go back to original teacher and take name off list • Turn in completed form to counselors before leaving gym • NO SCHEDULE CHANGES after arena day

  32. School Counselors Will be available throughout your student’s high school career to help support academic achievement Sometimes this means helping them with personal / social issues If you know you student is going through a difficult time, let his/her counselor know

  33. Tips for Student Success • Get to know your student’s counselor, teachers and principal • At first sign of school concerns contact your student’s counselor. If not available, leave message • Inform the school of special situation / don’t assume you child will • Be involved with your child and in the education process • Review PLANNER with your student (calendar, school rules, study tips, policies, etc.) • Know the school calendar / schedule. When are report card / midterm mailed?

Tips for Student Success • Call if no midterm / report card • Encourage your student to take the most challenging courses in relation to ability • Encourage a nightly homework routine • Place responsibility for success with your student • Ask about how to be involved as a volunteer at East…Parental INVOLVEMENT Crucial! • Encourage your student to be involved in school activities

Special Education Program • Model of service is similar to EGJHS • EACH student is assigned to SE advisor • Special Educators assist students with arena scheduling process • Special Education Teacher act as advocates • IEPs carry over • IEPs as student need changes when team agrees • Schedules must align with IEP • Students integrated in regular classroom when possible • Smaller specialized classrooms available as needed Parents should contact student advisor or counselor with any school concerns

Programs that Require Applications/Recommendations/Auditions • Student Council • Select Choir Groups • Natural Helpers (Sophomore year) • National Honor Society / Tri-M/Math / Spanish Honors Society / VICA, Mu Alpha Theta, etc • Jazz Band, Show Band, etc. • Jobs for WV Graduates • Library / Office Staff • Yearbook / Newspaper Staff

Advanced Placement Program • 11th and 12th grade s include: • Biology, Calculus, US History, English 11 and 12 • National Test (May) • Scored from 1-5 • Many private universities give college credit if student earns 3 or above • 4 or above for some colleges • Rigorous curriculum – extra points added to semester grade _ weighted internally NOT externally

  39. Honors Program • 10th – Math • 11th & 12th – Math, English, Science • Students must complete AP/Honors form and meet 2 of 3 criteria: • Teacher recommendation • A or B in subject area • 75% or above on standardized test or ABOVE MASTERY or HIGHER

Dual Credit Classes / EDGE • Dual Credit Classes are offered in a variety of classes • Allows students to earn college credit while completing high school course work • Consult Student Enrollment Bulletin or counselor to determine EDGE classes • Low to no cost for credit • Check with your students college to see if they accept dual credit or have articulation agreements to grant credit for coursework completed at East
