  2. Milford EVSD 6 Major Shifts in New Standards • Focus: Teachers significantly narrow and deepen the scope of how time and energy is spent in the math classroom. They do so in order to focus deeply on only the concepts that are prioritized in the standards. • Coherence: Principals and teachers carefully connect the learning within and across grades so that students can build new understanding onto foundations built in previous years. • Fluency: Students are expected to have speed and accuracy with simple calculations; teachers structure class time and/or homework time for students to memorize, through repetition, core functions.

  3. Milford EVSD 6 Major Shifts in New Standards 4. Deep Understanding: Students deeply understand and can operate easily within a math concept before moving on. They learn more than the trick to get the answer right. They learn the math. 5. Application: Students are expected to use math and choose the appropriate concept for application even when they are not prompted to do so. 6. Dual Intensity: Students are practicing and understanding. There is more than a balance between these two things in the classroom – both are occurring with intensity

Milford EVSD Math Investigations K-5 K-5 research-based curriculum designed to help all children understand fundamental ideas of number and operations, geometry, data, measurement, and early algebra. The curriculum at each grade level is activity-based and organized into units that encourage students to think creatively, develop and articulate their own problem-solving strategies, and work cooperatively with classmates.

Milford EVSD Digits, Grades 6-8 • Embeds the 8 mathematical practices into all lessons. • Junior high teachers have found the unit introductions, the real life application section of the lesson, and the extension activities for differentiation to be especially valuable. • Online homework platform provides immediate feedback to student. Teachers use homework data to focus on topics with which students are struggling. Students have individualized study plans.

Milford EVSD Meeting the Needs of All Students ST Math: Tiers II and III program used at the junior high and high school for intervention This research-based program uses interactive, visual animation to convey math concepts and develop deep understanding. Initially, students encounter visual puzzles free of language or symbols. Once the visual representation is mastered, language and symbols are gradually integrated into the puzzles. Students progress at their own pace, advancing to the next level only through mastering the previous level. The latest research in learning and motivation informs game design to build intrinsic motivation. Junior High Math Lab: curriculum aligned to grades 7 and 8 curriculum. Provides Tier II support High School Math Lab: OGT support Credit recovery assistance and support Skills and concepts Tier II instruction High School Math Skills Classes: Specially designed math skills support classes for students with a learning disability in math

Milford EVSD Meeting the Needs of All Students Cohort Group In 2011-2012, 44 sixth grade students were identified to independently study 7th and 8th grade math concepts using the Digits platform in order to begin the first year of high school math (Integrated Math I) as seventh graders. This allows these students to be able to take the second year of Advanced Placement Calculus as seniors. The 2012-2013 cohort consisted of 69 students, and this year there are 35 students in the cohort. All students in the cohort have scored Advanced on the OAA.

Milford EVSD High School Program Among academic factors, the strongest predictor of whether a student will earn a bachelor’s degree is the highest level of mathematics taken in high school (Adelman, 1999). The College Board confirms this. Using data from 65,000 students enrolled in 110 colleges, students’ high school coursework was evaluated to determine which courses were closely associated with students’ successful performance in college: Students who took more advanced courses, such as Pre-Calculus in the 11th grade or Calculus in 12th grade, were more successful in college. Students who took AP Calculus at any time during their high school careers were most successful (Wyatt & Wiley, 2010). In addition to Pre-Calculus, Calculus, and Statistics, Milford High School also offers College Algebra and Financial Algebra as fourth year mathematics courses.
