  1. The University of Cooperative Education Industrial Engineering Electrical Engineering Medical Engineering Computer Science Financial Management Public Management Bautzen twinned with Jelenia Góra www.ba-bautzen.de

  2. Conference and Exhibition on E-Mobility More information: http://verein.ba-bautzen.de www.ba-bautzen.de

  3. Student Project on E-Mobility www.ba-bautzen.de

  4. Implementation of a Practical Charging Technique for E-Bikes Florian Hempel (11E-A) and Dr Daniel Raabe BA-Bautzen www.ba-bautzen.de

  5. Agenda • Introduction to E-Mobility • Bike Hire Scheme ‚Oberlausitz per Rad‘ • Current charging technology • Our concept for a practical charging technology for E-Bikes within the rental network www.ba-bautzen.de

  6. E-Mobility E-Car (Renault Twizy), BEV Chargingtower • E-Mobility = the use of electric vehicles for transportation • E-Mobility combined with renewable energies could be one answer to global climate change, increased global population & limited resources • Aim of the German Federal Gov. is to put 1Mio Electric Vehicles on the road by 2020. • This seems to be unlikely considering current registration figures of E-cars (2012 only 3,000; Source: KBA). • With respect to E-Bikes incl. Pedelecs we have already hit the 1Mio threshold according to the bike association ADFC (sales of E-Bikes 2011–200,000, Sr: Derby Cycles) Number of E-cars on the road Source: zsw.bw.de www.ba-bautzen.de

  7. Pedelec and E-Bike Pedelec Pedelec (Pedal Electric Cycle) supports the user during cycling (max. power 250 Watts and max. velocity 25km/h E-Bike (Electric Bike) supports the user even without cycling (using the pedals) (max. power 500 Watts and max. velocity 20km/h

  8. National Development Plan E-Mobility Main objectives of the plan: • Improvement of energy storage/ battery technology (for increased range) • New vehicle technology (e.g. more efficient drive technology) • Development of an area wide charging grid Various initiatives to support this plan such as Although the use of E-Bikes has several advantages in terms of sustainability and local development e.g. through toursim  the further development of E-Bikes and its infrastructure is not support by current initiatives such as BAYERN-SACHSEN ELEKTROMOBILITÄT VERBINDET Quelle: Nationaler Entwicklungsplan Elektromobilität der Bundesregierung – BMBF, 2009 http://www.elektromobilitaet-verbindet.de one example  www.ba-bautzen.de

  9. Bike Hire Scheme ‚Oberlausitz per Rad‘ Network Facts: • An expandingcross-bordernetworkof 20 bike rentalpointssupporting bike toursim • Bikes canbepickedatonerentalpoint & returnedat a different rentalpointwithno additional charge • Rental pointsareindependentlymanagedbyhotels, bike shops, touristinformationpointsorlocal park administrations • CompletetechnicalservicebyLittle John Bikes • Openingof a new int. bike rentalstation in KrásnaLípa (Czech Republic) in April 2014 • More int. partnerswanted! • Unfortunetely, theschemecurrentlysupportsnoE-Mobilityand in particularno E-Bikes due tothe lack of a practical bike charginginfrastructure www.ba-bautzen.de

  10. E-Bike charging system Pedelec E-Bike Essensial for an E-Bike or Pedelec is a sufficient battery providing sufficient range. Unfortuenetely, these batteries have to be charged! How do we do this? www.ba-bautzen.de

  11. E-Bike charging system The batteryof an E-Bike canbechargedremovedfromthe bike • in a separate chargingstation • orwithoutmovingthebatteryfromthe bike • Drawbacks of the current system: • Charging E-Bikes/ Pedelecs requires the use of external battery chargers that are either carried by the user to the charging st. or supplied at the charging st. • Batteries and battery chargers are not standardized • Charging E-Bikes during long distance rides requires also a safe environment such as a dedicated room because the charging system of an E-Bike is currently not lockable to 230V socket charger Battery removed Battery in the bike docking station to 230V socket www.ba-bautzen.de

  12. What companies offer for bike users… No battery charger available at the charging point Open accesschargingpillar with 230V power sockets (CEE 7/5) Not a safe environment Quelle: Belectric Drive GmbH, Kitzingen No network www.ba-bautzen.de

  13. Our solution • Charging tower for partners of the bike scheme ‚Oberlausitz per Rad‘ • Having drawers for standardized and none standardized charging • Using renewable energy • Drawers are lockable www.ba-bautzen.de
