  1. God Calls a People for Mission Genesis 12-18 The Patriarchs and the Exodus http://www.cspc.net/adultEducation/electives.shtm

  2. Review • One story with unified plot—a Shakespeare drama • vs. medicine chest or encyclopedia approach • God loved the world and humanity. He lost it and is getting it back. • God’s persistent intervention halted a downward spiral into alienation from Himself. • We live in Christ as an extension of that mission

  3. Man’s glory An alternative to God’s covenant with Noah A conspiracy against the God of heaven Dominion of Man usurps God’s reign The crowning effort of man-centered religion Maintained a monolithic culture of human ingenuity, language, etc. The glory of the Lamb and the good of man. The fulfillment of God’s new covenant A dwelling place for the God of heaven among humanity Dominion of man in submission to God’s reign The crowning achievement of God’s intervening love and grace Includes the multiple expressions of human culture under the umbrella of grace and mercy. Babel (Babylon) and the New Jerusalem

  4. Three Crucial ThemesGen 12-Exodus 24 • The Self-revelation of YHWH • The nature of the Covenant • The promise of land • The sign of circumcision • “the seed of woman”

  5. John 8: 31-41; 8:56-59 • Who is the offspring of Abraham? • Verse 36 & 39: Dispute over fatherhood • Verse 44: “You are of your father, the devil” • Verse 56-58: Abraham rejoiced to see Jesus’ day; he saw it and was glad • A faith vision looking forward to Christ?? • Literal reading? • “Before Abraham, I am.” (v. 58) • Recall Luke 24: “Law of Moses, Psalms, Prophets…”

  6. Gen 12:1-3 And YWHW said to Abram, Go forth from the land, and from your kindred and from your father’s house, to the land I will show you. And I will make you a great nation and I will bless you and I will make your name great. And be a blessing And I will bless those who bless you; whereas the one who belittles you, I will curse; and in you will be blessed all kinship groups on the earth.

  7. Abraham (1) • Gen 12:1-3 • The promise is the “gospel” to Abraham • The blessing extends to the nations (Babel) • God’s election is purposeful and redemptive • Gen 12:7 • The Lord “appeared” to Abraham • The land is given to Abraham’s seed (zara’) --- a renewal of “dominion” • Altars built in v. 7 and 8 • Movement shifts from East to West (3:24; 4:16; 11:2)

  8. Abraham (2) • Gen 13:14-18 • Could Abraham’s inheritance be more than the land of Canaan? • “As far as you can see…” • “your offspring as the dust of the earth…” • Altar built in 13:18 • Hebrews 11:8-10

  9. Abraham (3) • Genesis 15:1-21 • “I am your shield, your very great reward.” (15:1) Who is speaking? • Through a son of Abraham (v. 4) comes a multitude of descendants (v. 5) • (v. 6) Abraham believed God and He credited to him as righteousness • The covenant ratified (17-20)

  10. One Gospel “The faith of the fathers in the Old Testament era, and our faith in the New Testament are one and the same faith in Christ Jesus, although times and conditions may differ… The faith of the fathers was directed at the Christ who was to come, while ours rests in Christ who has come. Time does not change the object of true faith…” Martin Luther’s Commentary on Gal 3:6

  11. Abraham (4) Gen 17 • YHWH appears • Abraham given a new name “father of many” nations (v.3-5) • The Sign of circumcision • Seed will be free of man’s impurity • A sign in blood—a cutting off of impurity—a reversal of the “image of Adam.” (5:3) • No sign for the woman?? • It is a sign to the nations—given to Abraham, his household and Ishmael

  12. Abraham (5) Gen 18 • Verse 1: the LORD appeared (YHWH) • Abraham demonstrates himself to be different than the Jews of John 8. (Gen 18:3-8) • Restatement of the promise of a son to Sarah • Abraham intercedes for mercy

  13. Review • Abraham encountered Yahweh personally and believed His promises • The promises indicate an expansive identity for Abraham’s descendants as he would be “the father of a multitude of nations.” • The promises indicate a central role for the land. • Abraham accepts those promises in the form of a covenant although Yahweh keeps the terms of the covenant

  14. For Next Week • Read / skim Exodus 5-19: • Note expressions referring to “knowing the Lord (YHWH).” • Who is being spoken about in each instance? • Read Exodus 24:9-11 • How can we explain this in light of 19:12-13?

  15. End: Lesson 4
