Perspectives on Nursing and Midwifery Workforce • Availability of skilled nurses and midwives is critical in ensuring high quality antenatal, delivery, emergency obstetric, and postnatal care services • Attention to the training of midwives and nurses is essential to attain the Millennium Development Goal for maternal health

Perspectives on Nursing and Midwifery Workforce Shortage of nurses and midwives in African Countries • Countries train too few nurses and midwives • Appropriate competencies to deliver quality care at all levels of the health service are needed • Inadequate provision for leadership develop in the profession

  4. Perspectives on Nursing and Midwifery Workforce Goals of NEPI • Complement the WHO AFRO and the International Council of Nurses policies on planning the education of nurses and midwives • Works with Ministries of Health and Education to encourage recruitment and retention
