    1. How To Be A Great Math Student A Learning Enhancement Center Workshop Coconino Community College

    2. A Great Math Student Have you ever worked really hard in a math class and received a grade that didnt show it? Have you ever had a mental block during a test? It doesnt matter if youve never been good at math, you can become a more effective learner and a more relaxed test-taker.

    3. Math is a Language Learning math is like learning a foreign language. There are many symbols and new words to know. Sometimes a familiar word has a different meaning in mathematics.

    4. Math Tip: Keep a list of math terms and their definitions. Ask your instructor or a learning assistant what they mean. Memorize them.

    5. Be Positive A positive outlook will make you a better learner and make it fun to be a student. You must decide now to make an honest effort in your class. Dont study or hang out with students who have a negative attitude about math. Instead of thinking self-defeating thoughts when studying, encourage yourself with positive thoughts.

    6. Take Responsibility There may always be things you dont like about your class (the book, the teacher, the pace). These are usually things that are out of your control. Instead of worrying about things beyond your control, concentrate on the things you can change.

    7. Take Responsibility contd If you dont understand the text, is there another book, video, or software that would help? If your teacher goes too fast, is it possible for you to review the material before class or to use a tape recorder? If your teacher doesnt have time to answer your question in class, can you meet in the teachers office or get assistance in the LEC?

    8. During Math Class: Ask questions. Sit in front and near the center. Attend all classes. If you must miss a class: get a copy of notes and homework assignments read the notes and the text, make a serious attempt to do the homework.

    9. During Math Class contd Use a large, loose-leaf notebook. Use the first half for notes and the second half for homework. Use question marks to identify confusing material in your notes or book. Go over your questions with the teacher or a learning assistant.

    10. Doing Your Homework Know your teachers office hours and use them to get help. Get help from learning assistants in the LEC. Try other resources such as videos, software, and other textbooks (in the LEC).

    11. Doing Your Homework contd... Do your homework as soon as possible after it is assigned. Work with other students. Form a regular study group. Study in 30-minute segments with 5-10 minute breaks.

    12. Studying For Tests Begin studying at least one week before the test. Always aim for 100%: math builds upon previous topics the higher the grade you aim for, the higher the grade you will get helps prevent mental blocks during the test

    13. Studying For Tests contd Know all the topics that will be on the test. Take a practice test from your book or a computer program. Learn to solve the problems in random order. Finish studying one topic before you begin the next.

    14. Taking Tests Plan to be early. Look over the entire test before answering anything. Do the problems youre confident about first. Read the questions 2-3 times. If you get stuck, put a star by that question and return to it later.

    15. Taking Tests contd Show all your work...your teacher may give partial credit! Dont leave anything blank. Attempt everything, or at least write down a formula that may be relevant.

    16. Taking Tests contd If you finish early, check your answers carefully. When you are stumped: write down the information you are given write down what you need to find or prove write down any formulas or definitions that may help try to use all the information you are given

    17. Resources in the LEC Math learning assistance Math videos Math interactive computer software Books including Overcoming Math Anxiety, Math Survival Guide, and Mastering Mathematics. Study skills videos.
