  3. What is School? • A school is an institution designed for the teaching of students (or "pupils") under the direction of teachers. • Most countries have systems of formal education, which is commonly compulsory. • In addition to these fundamental schools, students in a given country may also attend schools before and after primary and secondary education. • Such as kindergarten or pre-school which provides some schooling to very young children (typically ages 3-5).

  4. Names for schools • In these systems, students progress through a series of schools. • The names for these schools vary by countries but generally they include: - Primary school for young children. - Secondary school for teenagers who have completed primary education (Including preparatory schools). - An institution where higher education is taught, is commonly called a university college or university.

  5. School ownership and operation • Many schools are owned or funded by the government. • Private schools operate independently from the government. -Private schools usually rely on fees from families whose children attend the school for funding -Many private schools are associated with a particular religion; these are known as parochial schools.

  6. Are Private or Public Schools Best for Your Child? • It's time to send your child to school, but which one? • A child's education is important. It can determine his or her academic future for years to come. • The environment a child is in can be very influential on his or her personality straight through teenage years. • Let's take a look at the deciding factors of choosing between a public and private school.

  7. PUBLIC VS. PRIVATE SCHOOLS • Are Private Schools Better Than Public Schools?

  8. Comparison between private and public school in general • Curriculum and Learning Program: • Public schools must follow all standard teaching systemin education set by the government. • While private schools can have flexibility with how they teach, such as including art or science in all classes, according to the subjects’ needs.

  9. Acceptance • When it comes to acceptance, public schools are required to accept everyone. No matter what their needs are. • Private schools may pick and choose who they accept through a selection process. Such as having a small test before accepting them.

  10. Special needs : • Public schools must educate all children and provide the necessary programs to meet their special needs. This means that all school districts must have special education programs and teachers who are trained to work with special-needs students. • Private schools do not have to accept children with special needs, (although there are a small number of private schools designed for special-needs children). -As a result, most private schools do not have special education programs or teachers trained to work with that student population.

  11. Cost for Each School: • Public schools do not charge a tuition fee for attending. • Private schools charge a tuition fee when attending their school.

  12. Class sizes: Class size is one of the major differences between public and private schools. • The class size in public schools can be as large as 30-35 students (or more) • while most private schools keep their class sizes at 15-20 students.

  13. Discipline: • The old saying goes that kids will be kids. This is true for both public and private schools. There are going to be discipline issues in either case. • Public schools typically have more major discipline issues such as violence and drugs than private schools doespecially in the western countries. • Private schools tend to have more parental support which often leads to less discipline issues. • Private schools also have more flexibility than public schools when it comes to removing a student from a classroom or removing them from school all together.

  14. Safety • Violence in public schools is a top priority for administrators and teachers. • An example to violence is the shootings and other acts of violence which have taken place in public schools. Especially in America. • Private schools are generally more safer places. Access to campuses and buildings is carefully monitored and controlled. Because these schools usually have fewer students than a public schools, it is easier to supervise the school population.

  15. Graduation Rates • The rate of public school students entering college after graduation has varied between 62-67% in recent years. • In private schools the matriculation rate is typically in the 90-95% range. • The reason why most private high schools do well in this area is that they are generally selective. They will only accept students who can do the work.

  16. Cultural Diversity • Public schools provide more cultural diversity than private schools. • At public schools students learn to accept and adapt to different people with different beliefs than he or she has. • It's the perfect social learning environment. • Public school exposes the real world social environment experience that students can carry into adulthood. • Private schools are more limited in cultural diversity because of the independent atmosphere they adopt. • How ever there are some cultural diversity but compared to public schools are less than them.

  17. Comparison between public/private primary schools in Kurdistan . • Differences in terms of building: • Buildings (big enoughand interesting) • Classrooms (big, calm) • Stadium (high standard football stadium, tennis table, basketball stadium, the simple games such as seesaw, slide, swing which are very important and interesting especially for primary pupils)

  18. Differences in term of teachers • In private schools, best teachers are chosen to teach the students since they pay more money to the teachers. • In private schools, Teachers are more obliged to do their works in a good way or they will get fired. • In private schools, Teachers should not have more than 3 or 4 lessons in one day in order to focus on his students. • In some public schools, teachers usually have more than 6 lessons in one day .

  19. In terms of material: they are provided by great numbers of technological equipment such as: • Smart boards. • Multimedia rooms (TVs and lots of computers)

  20. In terms of strategies used in primary schools • Giving awards (stars, presents, hearts) for motivating students to study. • Giving black birds (as a punishment which psychologically keeps the pupils calm and controlled.) • Having behavior table. • Green, red and yellow cards

  21. Policies and activities • Students are obliged to obey the rules, if they don’t obey, they will be expelledfrom the school, and before being accepted specific policies have been introduced to both the students and their family. • Visiting students’ house. After one month of studying every teacher must visit all his or her students individually. • Having different activity clubs on the weekends, such as music, artistic, language and sport clubs which will be a very interesting and preferred thing for the students.

  22. Activities • Having activitesin the holidays including summer holidays, such as inviting all the students for different occasions and arranging different sport leagues which will enhance the students to love the schools more and more. • Taking the students to different countries. This is very great about the private schools since it has never or rarely done by the public schools.

  23. Teachers and parents in private schools • Parents meeting, Tea time with parents, The parents have to come to the school and see the teachers face to face and talk about the problems that the students face during the class times. • The teacher has to repeat one of the lessons of that month practically for the parents to let them know what they have covered while this might has never taken place in the public schools. • The parents will have their own comments about the teacher’s efficiency.

  24. Teacher and school • Making the class colorful; to entertain the students, the teachers should come with new ideas to make the classes beautiful and attraction which has a great impact on the process of learning.

  25. Teachers and school • Having agenda; sending special papers to the parents about the student’s progress and week points in the school and the classes every Thursday. • Having daily plan, the teacher has to have daily plans and submit them to the school headmaster each and every day. • If the daily plan couldn’t appeal the headmaster the teacher should have an alternative.

  26. Teacher and school • Teacher meeting or gathering; every Saturday all the teachers should gather and tell each other about their plans and new ideas and if they find the ideas or learning procedures so they are going to implement the new ideas into the curriculum. • Such as using a special way to teach students vocabulary easily, for example I have a video and forward this video to my colleagues and they will use the video to their students.

  27. management of ELT in public/private educational system • After all these comparisons we can come to the conclusion that management in private schools is much easier, since the class sizes are smaller. • Also they are not selecting students randomly but testing them and then accepting them according to their ability with the schools’ ways of learning. • In private schools the teachers and students are very close with each other they are mostly like friends. • the teachers and even the headmasters of the school are visiting each student's houses individually about two times in the year!

  28. How ever private schools are great, but still there are many important people through out the world who went to public schools, such as; • Albert Einstein (The great scientist) • Bill Gates (Microsoft owner) • Steve Jobs (Apple owner) • Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook founder) • Shaquille O'Neal (Hollywood Actor) • Michael Jordan (legendary Basketball player) • Oprah Winfrey (Famous TV presenter) • Barack Obama (USA president)

  29. Conclusion • Before parents decide whether to put their children in public school or private school they should research both public and private schools in their area. • Write down the qualities a school should have. Parents can take a tour of the schools in the district and ask questions, especially if their child is interested in extracurricular activities, is gifted or has special needs. If possible, parents should take their children on the tours and get their input. • Despite all these advantages of privateschools, the main obstacle is the money which doesn’t allow every children to studyin private schools! • So to make the public schools better, the government should at least adapt some good procedures used in private schools and improve the public schools from many perspectives such as teachers, buildings, etc..
