  2. What is beneficiary communications? • Being accountable to our beneficiaries • Bad news is better than no news • More effective and efficient programmes • It saves lives • Not new – BC is about better dissemination of information & improved 2-way communication with people

What is mobile cinema? • Launched in Burundi in November 2013 in 4 districts • Bujumbura Mairie& Rural, Cibitoke and Bururi • Used for cholera & malaria prevention • Hygiene promotion activities – hand washing, songs for making oral rehydration, bed net hanging • Reached 6000 people by the end of January 2014 • Used as part of the flood response in Bujumbura

  4. What is mobile cinema? • Visits schools and communities • Short cartoon on cholera or malaria prevention • Includes a debate with community – what do they know? What are their issues • Question and answer session • Distribute soap and leaflets • Activity takes 1 to 1.5 hours • Also launched in Rwanda • Used in Sierra Leone to respond to the cholera outbreak

  6. The mobile cinema show • Hand out copies of the mobile cinema malaria and cholera programme from Burundi • Go through each section with participants

Why use mobile cinema? • Can be used to educate on any topic • Can be used to collect feedback – what do people know & think? • Can be used to spark community action • Good entry point for health, WATSAN, DM activities • Participatory& fun – so supports learning • Reach large numbers of people at one time

Why use mobile cinema? • Prevention activity • But can be scaled up in emergencies • Clear role for the Collines to be involved • Works well in schools as a peer education & youth activity • Fits Burundi’s oral traditions • Could be income generating – hold film nights in the branch • Successful pilot in 4 branches – now rolling out

The impact in Sierra Leone • Visited 57 schools & 67 communities in 4 months • 47,000 people attended country-wide • Each branch given their own kit and have reached 10,000 people • 17,000 bars of soap and 8500 leaflets handed out • Answered 500 community questions • Gave valuable insight to community beliefs and knowledge

  10. The impact of the mobile cinema • 20% increase in knowledge on causes of cholera • 22% increase in knowledge on preventing cholera • 21% increase in hand washing knowledge • 28% increase in knowledge on safe water

  11. The impact of the mobile cinema • 95% reduction in people who think defecation in rivers or the open is safe • Biggest community issues are lack of latrines, clean water and a dirty environment • Increase of 32% who can give the new SSS recipe • Common questions – what…how…why?

What is the plan in Burundi? • Cinema equipment already provided to 4 branches • Cibitoke, Bururi, Bujumbura Rural and Bujumbura Marie • Now equipment supplied to 4 new branches • Makamba, Bubanza, Mwaro, Muramyva • Each branch will deliver the cinema 3 times per month • Visiting one schools and communities – both in one day • Films provided in Kirundi on cholera & malaria • Focus on link between cholera and dirty water • Will use the house hold water treatment manual

Materials provided • Films on malaria treatment, use of bed nets, and cholera prevention in Kirundi • Equipment (projector, screen, speakers, microphones, small generator, 4-track mixer, amplifier, DVD player, additional materials eg lighting, cabling, stabilizer etc) • Leaflets on house hold water treatment & malaria • Soap • Promotional banner • Funds for fuel, per diem • Smart phones for monitoring • Training on how to run mobile cinema!
