  2. Parts of the ocean • Continental shelf- the gradual sloping of a continent that extends under the ocean • Atlantic ocean- extends 100 km to 350 km into the sea • Pacific ocean- extends 10 to 30 km

  3. Continental slope and Abyssal plains • Continental slope- Extends from the outer edge of the slope to the ocean floor Abyssal plain- flat seafloor They are 4000 to 6000 m below sea level Some abyssal plains in the Atlantic Ocean are extremely large.

  4. Seamounts and Guyots • Seamounts- small, underwater volcanic peaks • Usually inactive • Guyots- flat topped volcanic peaks

Mid ocean ridge and trenches • Mid ocean ridge- new ocean floor is formed • Occurs at divergent plate boundaries • All oceans have mid ocean ridges • Trenches- a long, narrow, steep sided depression where one crustal plate sinks below another • Usually occur at subduction zones • Famous one is the Mariana trench to the south of Japan
