The Energy Challenge • Global energy demand is projected to be approximately 30% higher in 2030 compared to today’s level. • Due to their availability, affordability and versatility, oil and natural gas will continue to supply about 60 percent of the world's energy needs over the next 20 years. Is that enough? How do we meet the world’s growing energy needs, while also reducing the impact of energy use on the environment?

  6. “In order to combat dependence on fossil fuels, the US should build more nuclear fission reactors.” AGREE or DISAGREE???

Research/Article Day • Read the assigned articles and answer the questions on the corresponding station cards. • Make sure your answers are thorough and accurate as possible – your classmates are depending on your answers for the gallery walk tomorrow. • You must complete at least two station cards before class ends today.

  9. Gallery Walk • Gallery walk the articles and corresponding questions and answers. While doing so, take notes at each station using your handout as a guide. • Keep in mind your end goal; you are gathering the information you need to be able to discuss this topic and write an essay. • Write a summary paragraph (3-4 sentences) of each station on your notes handout. You MUST include 2 words from the lists below in your summary. Underline or highlight where you use the words.

  11. Philosophical Chairs – The Rules • Choose a side and sit in the appropriate seat.  Agree Disagree  • Listen carefully while others are speaking. Do not interrupt! • If you feel someone makes a good argument or your opinion is swayed, move to the other side. • You must speak at least three times. You will receive 3 pieces of paper and will write your full name on each of them. When you wish to talk, simply hold up the paper and when chosen, it will be your turn. • Think before you speak. Use your notes from your research to support your opinion. • Address the ideas, not the person. BE POLITE!! • No cell phones during the discussion – they will be taken up!

Writing a Letter • You will write a letter to a U.S. congressman/woman to defend your opinion on nuclear energy and specifically the statement: • “In order to combat dependence on fossil fuel, the US should build more nuclear fission reactors.” • Follow the instructions in your packet. • This is a minor grade.

  13. Documentaries/Videos • You will be watching a couple documentaries over nuclear energy, nuclear power plants, fossil fuel, and energy consumption. It is a good idea to take some notes while watching these videos. Answer the post-video questions after watching these videos.

Nuclear Power Propaganda • You have been challenged to design the next billboard, pamphlet, commercial or other media outlet to promote OR oppose the building of a nuclear power plant in Texas. • This assignment counts as a major grade. • You may work with a partner. • Project is due on Tuesday, May 27th.

  19. Commercials / Video • Acceptable format that can be played at school. • Between 2-3 minutes in length. • Project must be saved on a cd, dvd, or flash drive and turned in.

Requirements • Clear stance (PRO or CON) towards the building of a nuclear power plant in Texas. • Slogan. • At least 5 facts to support your stance (can be embedded in your project or on the back of your project ) • At least two pictures. • At least three colors (not including black and white) • Creative and neatness count. • Good use of in-class time To Do TODAY: • Decide who you are working with and which stance you are taking. • Decide what media you are doing your project in. • Decide what supplies are needed and assign who is bringing what. • Come up with your slogan. • Decide on your five facts. • Begin working on the project.
