  1. Allegory

  2. Definition • Extended metaphor • A figurative mode of communication conveying a meaning other than the literal. • The representation of abstract ideas or principles by characters, figures, or event • Modern allegory often reveals the artist’s intent or worldview.

  3. Example – Super Heroes Superman, Spiderman, and Batman, for example, are all allegorical representations of the everyman. The evils they fight are the temptations to greed, to violence and to behavior that will in other ways disrupt society. Superheroes stand as both the everyman and the guardian against evil.

  4. One of the most interesting workings of allegory in modern television was the series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” Each week Buffy would face a new demon or vampire that was also allegorical to whatever issues Buffy faced as a high school and later college student.

  5. Lord of the Flies • Lord of the Flies is best known as an allegory. It is an allegory on several levels: political, religious and psychological. • On its most basic level it is an allegory of human society today. • The novel's primary implication is that "what we have come to call civilization is at best no more than skin deep.”

  6. Lord of the Flies as an allegory • Political Allegory - Lord of the Flies shows the world at the brink of atomic destruction. The novel serves as a warning to the leaders of the world. • Psychological Allegory -the characters in the novel personify the different aspects of the human psyche. • Religious Allegory - Lord of the Flies is a religious allegory of the Garden of Eden. It was a perfect island with good food, good weather, and good water. The beastie is the snake in the Garden that lures (tricks) the others to not hold up to their duty. The parachutist and Piggy represent the fall of mankind. Jack and Ralph are very much like Cain and Able. Simon is a Christ figure who sacrifices himself to save them.
