  3. Definitions • Scientific Materialism/Determinism/Naturalism • The belief that all reality can be explained by natural physical laws. The only reality is that which can be described by the scientific method. • If the scientific materialist is right then… • No God -- No ethical standard of truth • No soul -- No right and wrong • No spirit -- No purpose • No free will -- No consciousness • No morality -- “I” do not exist. • No free will

Darwinism • The idea that all living things have descended from one (or perhaps a few) very simple living organism in the very distant past by a random process of genetic mutation and natural selection. • Is acceptance of Darwinism rejection of belief in God? • Is acceptance of Darwinism rejection of the Bible as inspired by God?

  5. Deism • The belief in an impersonal creator who is not involved in the day-to-day workings of the universe. An impersonal God. The world is a machine. The mechanical universe

Creationism • A belief that there is a supernatural Creator who created the entire universe and is responsible for all reality. • Young Earth Creationism (YEC) • Creationists who are convinced Genesis 1 is to be take literally—that the earth is about 6000 years old. Most YEC’s additionally claim that scientific knowledge is consistent with this belief. • Old Earth Creationism (OEC) • Creationists who do not take the six days of Genesis 1 literally, but who nevertheless believe in a personal Creator of everything. They believe that scientific evidence supports the conclusion that the earth is about 4.5 billion years old.

  7. Intelligent Design (ID) • A belief that nature shows clear evidence of an intelligent designer. They believe that scientific evidence necessarily implies that purely random processes cannot explain the properties and history of the universe. • Most (but not all) in the ID movement reject pure Darwinism. • Scientists such as Behe, Hugh Ross and others have tried to show that there is irreducible complexity in living things which cannot be the result of random, Darwinian processes. • ID is sometimes accused by its enemies of believing in a God-of-the-gaps. • Due to recent findings, many ID supporters are moving toward accepting common descent.

  8. The Anthropic Principle • The idea that the properties of the universe we live in are so extremely well suited to support advanced life forms that the only reasonable conclusion is that the universe was purposefully created by a designer so as to support life. • The constants of the universe are “fine tuned” to fantastically exact values without which we would not be here. • Similar to ID but not necessarily associated with irreducible complexity

  9. Francis Collins • Head of the Human Genome Project. • Believes in design and accepts the Anthropic Principle. • Believes the Bible is inspired by God, that Jesus was bodily resurrected, etc. • Accepts common descent and most of the implications of Darwinism.

  10. What’s up with the movie “Expelled?” • There is a hard core of scientific materialists who are in control of the money and determine what is acceptable science. These people actively persecute scientists in the ID movement, preventing their voice from being heard. • Not only is this closed minded and bigoted, but it just so happens that scientific materialists are wrong (at least on the creation of life, if not on Darwinism).

  11. What’s up with the movie “Expelled?” • Darwinism is a dangerous philosophy which denies human dignity. It was the philosophical underpinning behind the Nazi movement and, indirectly, the cause of World War II and the genocide of the Jews.

  12. Is all this true? • Well…………… • The basic premise of the movie is more or less true, but its “truth” is exaggerated and presented in a highly inflammatory style.

  13. An example: Guillermo Gonzalez Iowa State University • Author of “The Privileged Planet.” • Denied tenure (ie fired) • Was he persecuted for writing “The Priveleged Planet?” For his support of ID?

  15. A Response It is possible to be right and yet to behave badly. For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. 2 Cor 10:3-4 Do not repay evil for evil or insult with insult, but with blessing… Always be prepared to give an answer to anyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. 1 Peter 3: 9, 15-16 “So in everything, do unto others as you would have them do unto you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.” Matthew 7:12
