  2. A ratio is a statement of how two numbers compare. It is a comparison of the size of one number to the size of another number. 5 4 or 5 to 4 or 5 : 4 What is the ratio of kittens to puppies? There are 5 kittens and 4 puppies, so the ratio of KITTENS to PUPPIES is: 5 kittens to 4 puppies .

  3. What is the ratio of ponies to zebras? Write the ratio in three different ways. 10 5 10 to 5 10 : 5

  4. Write the ratio of soccer balls to funny shaped American footballs as a fraction. 6 12 = = 1 Soccer ball 2 Footballs 6 6 Soccer balls Funny footballs Ratios can be simplified like all fractions!

  5. 12 feet 8 feet If the units are the same in a ratio the units may be canceled. Then simplify the ratio. 12 8 4= 4= 3 2 RATIOS may be left as improper fractions!!!! What is the ratio of fish in picture A to fish in picture B? A B Write the ratio as a fraction in lowest terms. 9 fish 15 fish 3= 3= 3 5 The ratio of fish in picture A to fish in picture B is 3 to 5. Units (fish) will cancel since they are the same.

Sometimes in order to write ratios in lowest terms they must be converted to the same units(This is where it gets tricky!) 3 days 15 hours = 24 5 72 hours 15 hours 3 3 = Units are now the same so cancel the units Units both measure time so must be converted to the same unit in order to simplify. It is easier to convert the larger unit days to the smaller unit (hours). 3 days x hours day = 24 1 72 hours 1

Which ratios would have to be converted in order to write in lowest terms? 5 minutes 1 hour 3 inches 1 foot 10 wins 15 games 16 balloons 4 people Both above ratios would have to be converted to same units to simplify. 1 hour x minutes hour 60 1 so = 5minutes 60minutes 60 minutes 1 hour = 60 minutes 1 foot X inches feet 3 inches 12 inches 12 1 = so 12 inches 1 foot = 12 inches Then of course you would cancel the units and simplify!

  8. Comparing two ratios Tell which of the two ratios is greater. 160 =8 x 20 movies 30 books 6 movies 8 books X 6 = 180 There are a number of methods to compare these two ratios: find a common denominator, convert to decimals, or my favorite cross products. 30 books 8 books
