If you can trace the possession of the work from the artist to the present owner, that is strong evidence that the artist created the work.   3. Authenticity Scientists are very interesting, but they come after the true connoisseurs. So fingerprints, all this stuff, is kind of that lovely what-if, but it’s not essential to the heart, to the artistic soul of the thing, and that has no Pollock soul or heart. Thomas Hoving The artworld doesn’t understand fingerprints, any more than it understands DNA. So you’re asking them to take what they don’t understand. What would be the best general method for determining authenticity? Compare Horton’s case with that of the art dealer, Alan Stone, who bought a Pollock from a garbage dump.
