Why Monitor: • The Monitor is the most important person in the shop! • Shop Cannot open or run without one • Members agree to abide by the Monitor’s directions and decisions “I have read and understand our procedures and rules and will do my best to follow them. I understand the Monitor is the interpreter of these procedures and rules, and I will follow directions from the Monitor.” • Club Guidelines: Each member that uses the woodshop more than twice a year should monitor at least once. Members that use the woodshop more frequently should monitor more often. • Monitor Statistics: • 500+ Members • 200+ Trained as Monitors • 130 Monitored last year (2011) • 20 Members covered over 50% of the Monitor slots • All members are expected to be familiar with the Monitor’s Responsibilities and Authority.   4. General Shop Entry Requirements

General Monitor Responsibilities Safety is primary responsibility • AM monitor shift – 8:30 to 12:30; PM shift – 12:30 to 4:30 • Monitors Responsibilities • Sign in as Monitor • Wear orange vest. • Stay alert to active work on high risk machines • Table Saws • Jointer • Planers • Router • Shaper • Miter saws • Lathes • Conduct shop tours for visitors unless busy, then find someone else to lead tour. • If shop is very busy and you cannot keep up with activity, recruit a “temporary” additional monitor to put on a second orange apron. • Monitors Must Not: • Read or work on your own project or shop project or on equipment repair. Member Responsibilities • Members MUST • Login When Entering • Wear Name Badge • Not wear ties or long straps around neck when operating machinery. • Remove loose fitting watches, jewelry, and any loose items in shirt pockets. • Roll long sleeves up above the elbows. • Secure Long hair so that it does not obstruct vision or risk beingentangled in equipment. • Members Must Not: • Wear Open Toed Shoes • Smoke or the use tobacco products of any kind inside the Shop • Drink alcoholic beverages on the premises • Wear loose fitting work gloves when operating machinery; (tight fitting (golf, batting, woodworking) gloves may be worn at the user’s discretion.) • Seal, Stain, Paint or do wood burning June 2012

Visitor Responsibilities • Visitors MUST • Be escorted by either the Monitor or a Member • Monitors should be informed of Visitors if a Member is guiding the visitor • Visitors Must Not: • Operate any equipment • Wear Open Toed Shoes • Smoke or the use tobacco products of any kind inside the Shop June 2012

General Shop Requirements • The air handling system must be on if equipment connected to it is being used, • NO treated or “used” lumber, metal, PVC, glass, or cement board may be used in the shop. • Flammable items, of any kind, may not be stored. • Large items must not be left where they will obstruct the shop Monitor’s view or prohibit a normal fire exit flow.   9. Routine Monitor Responsibilities: • Insure that Guards are on table saws. (including the micro table saw) • Members may remove at own risk, but must put guard back before leaving table. • Remind members to not stand behind table saws when others are using them • Make sure guard is properly positioned on the jointer. • Make sure hardened glue is scraped from surfaces before running through sanders jointers, and planers • Don’t allow pine, painted wood or any other wood that is damp or wet in power sanders. • Remind members to clean up after they finish their work. • Any problem with machines, tools, supplies, etc. should be noted on the first sheet in the monitor’s book. Show members where the book is and have them enter the problem • Money handling: • Any incoming money should be noted on envelope, money inserted in envelope, sealed, and deposited in Treasurer’s box. • Assist prospective new members with the sign up process • Prior to putting their name on the next Safety Orientation Class list, they must: • Fill out an envelope with all information complete • Insert Annual dues in the envelope (check preferred) to cover the class fee ($20) plus annual dues ($40). Note that dues are reduced $10 each quarter • Fee is NON-REFUNDABLE. See the sign up sheet for full details. • The first 10 people to sign up and pay will take the class. Others should put their names on the wait list which will roll to the next month. June 2012

  10. Opening, Mid Day, Closing Procedures

  11. OPENING the Shop • Slide sign to “OPEN” • Turn on the compressor and vacuum systems. (May already be on when you arrive) June 2012

  12. OPENING (cont) • Turn on dust collection system when anyone starts using equipment attached to the collector. June 2012

Mid Day • On Monday, Wednesday and Friday at about 10:00 a.m. the Monitor shuts down the air handling system and recruits assistance to: • Empty the Dust barrels • Empty the vacuum system buckets • The morning monitor should shut down the dust collector around noon – let it stay off for a few minutes – until the “shaking” has stopped. • Restart as soon as anyone begins using equipment attached to the collector system. CLOSING • Work stops and clean up starts at 4 PM • Turn off coffee maker. • Dump coffee in sink and rinse pot. • Make sure all equipment is turned off and safety guards are in place. • Recruit Members to: • Return all hand tools (except hand sanders) to tool rack. • Brush or vacuum all machines, benches, counters, and equipment. Keep dust collection system running during clean up. • Sweep floor. • Dump trash barrels in dumpster behind shop. • Turn off dust collection system when clean up completed. • Turn off the compressor and vacuum systems –outside on back wall • Make sure back door is closed and locked. • Remove orange monitor’s apron and place in drawer. • Turn off lights – switches by drill presses & back door. One bank of lights are set to stay on. June 2012

  15. CLOSING – locking the door • Release the push bar on front doors with hex key (hanging on wall to left of door). The doors will automatically lock when closed. • Move “Open/Closed” sign to “Closed” June 2012

  18. EMERGENCY PROCEDURE • Call 911 for serious injury. Provide operator with: Your Name Woodshop phone number – 512-591-7853 Woodshop address – 1303 Sun City Blvd Description of injury and severity Name of injured person Stay on line until operator tells you to hang up • Assist the injured person and solicit help from other Woodworkers to aid and clean up. • Call Community Association office. 512- 948-7700 • Complete CA accident form – blanks are stored in file cabinet under desk. • Notify a Club Officer (phone list on wall). • Enter details in Safety Record log located in Monitor’s desk.   19. RED PANIC BUTTON • Located on wall at Monitor’s desk. • Trips the two main breakers to all primary machines. • Lights and dust collection system not affected. June 2012

  20. RED PANIC BUTTON • To restart, • pull out red button • Reset the two main circuit breakers on wall at monitor’s desk • All should stand clear of machines for reset. June 2012

How to Sign up for a Monitor slot • The “old Fashioned” way – on the paper calendar • VIA INTERNET • There are two ways you can access this calendar to sign up: • Sign up using the internet from home. • Stop by the wood shop and use the computer in the conference room. Instructions are posted on the wall behind the computer. • Following are instructions for accessing the calendar on your home computer: • Go to the following website: http://www.localendar.com/elsie • Log in using "wsmonitor" as the ID and "ws2006" as the password (without the ") • Find the bright pink "Open" time slot that you want to fill as monitor and single left click on that time slot • Another window will open titled "Edit Event" • In the bright pink "Title:" space • erase "Open" • key in your name • Scroll down to "Background Color:" and erase "ed008c"...don't worry the pink will not go away until you... • Scroll back to the top and click on the "Update" button. • We will continue to have the large calendar on the desk for reference; however when there is a conflict between the online calendar and the hard copy calendar on the monitor's desk, the hard copy calendar will prevail.
