  3. Disease • An abnormal condition of an organism which interrupts the normal bodily functions that often leads to feeling of pain and weakness, and usually associated with symptoms and signs.

  4. Disease • Organism: Living things that are capable of reacting to stimuli, reproduction, growth, and homeostasis.[origin: Gk. organismos, from An. Gk. organon , “organ, instrument, tool”] • Micro-organism: An organism that is microscopic or submicroscopic, which means it is too small to be seen by the unaided human eye. [origin: Gk. mīkrós “small”]

  5. Disease • Agent: Any power, principle or substance capable of producing an effect, whether physical, chemical or biological. [Origin: L. Agens = acting] • Pathogen: An agent causing disease or illness to its host, such as an organism or infectious particle capable of producing a disease in another organism. [origin: from Gk. pathos, suffering/emotion, and gene, to give birth to.]

Disease • Host: An organism that is infected with or is fed upon by a parasitic or pathogenicorganism An animal or plant that nourishes and supports a parasite; the hostdoes not benefit and is often harmed by the association. • Vector: An organism that transmits the agent or pathogen-causing organism from the reservoir to the host. [origin: L. vehere, “carrier”.]

  7. Disease • Parasite: An organism that obtains nourishment and shelter on another organism. [origin: L. parasitus from Gk. parasitos “person who eats at the table of another”] • Infection: invasion and multiplication of microorganisms in body tissues.

  8. Disease • Infectious: Capable of being transmitted by infection, with or without actual contact. • Virulence: The degree or ability of a pathogenicorganism to cause disease.

  9. Distribution of a disease • Endemic: a disease or agentpresent or usually prevalent in a population or geographical area at all times. [origin: Gk. Endemos, “dwelling in a place”] • Epidemic: Occurring in numbers clearly in excess of normal expectancy. [origin Gk. Epidemios, “prevalent”]

  10. Distribution of a disease • Outbreak: The occurrence of a large number of cases of a disease in a short period of time. • Pandemic: An epidemic that affects a wide geographic area.
