  5. History 4 • Berlin Conference in 1884-85 in Germany to divide the continent of African in spheres of influence (colonies).

  6. History 5 • Partitioning caused civil war, ethnic conflict, artificial boundaries, poor example of democracy and therefore dictatorships

  7. History 6 • After WWII but mainly in the 1960s and 1970s

  10. History 9 • The separation of blacks & colored (Indians & other Asians) people from whites in South Africa • Black South Africans had much of their rights and land taken away • Purpose was so the white minority could maintain control of the country and all its natural resources

  11. History 10 • The first democratically elected and first black president of South Africa • Freedom fighter, member of the ANC • One of the greatest men to ever walk the face of this earth. 

  12. History 11 • President of South Africa who released Mandela from prison and worked with him to make South Africa a democratic nation. • He & Mandela won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993

  17. Gov. 3 cont’d • Presidential – leader is elected separately from the legislature and answers to the people • Parliamentary – people elect legislature and legislature chooses leader. Leader answers to legislature. Title is Prime Minister

  18. Gov 4 • Many possible answers – several political parties, low level of corruption, free elections, military doesn’t control country.etc. etc

  19. Gov 5 • Many possible choices – one party rule, no or few citizen rights, corruption, civil war, etc. etc.

  20. Gov 6 • South Africa • Kenya • Ghana • Botswana • Mauritius (where I wish I was right now – no offense)

  21. Econ 1 • Command – government controls • Market – consumer controls • Traditional – ancestors control

  22. Econ 2 • Mixed is the most common • Know about the economic continuum

  23. Econ 3 • Command – government • Market – consumers • Traditional – you do what your ancestors did

  24. Econ 4 • Government does not invest in human capital or technology therefore the countries many resources do not benefit Nigeria (or other similar countries) like they should. • Plentiful natural resources do not make a country wealthy, investment in human capital does

  25. Econ 5 • If you invest in the children/education/human capital - you can do great things!!!!!
