  1. Revolution, Rotation, & Seasons

  2. What do you already know? The sun has the following effects on earth: Heats the earth’s surface & atmosphere Causes winds & the water cycle. Lights half of the earth’s surface at a time.

  3. Rotation: The spinning motion of an object on its axis

  4. What do you already know… about Earth’s day/night cycle? The earth rotates on its axis. • That takes about 24 hours • It causes our day/night cycle.

  5. Observe an animation of earth’s rotation.

  6. Revolution: The movement of an object around another object

  7. What do you already know… about the earth’s motion around the sun? It takes 365 ¼ days (one year) Earth’s motion around the sun is called a “revolution” Earth’s orbit is not circular…it’s elliptical.

  8. The earth’s tilt on its axis remains constant throughout the year.

  9. Revolution or Rotation?

  10. The basketball is… Revolving

  11. The skater is… Rotating

  12. The top is… Rotating

  13. The people are… Revolving

  14. Mickey’s car is… Revolving

  15. The ball is… Rotating

  16. The Earth is… Revolving around the sun

  17. But, the Earth is also… Rotating on its axis

  18. What do you already know… about seasons on Earth? How sunlight hits the earth depends, in part, on latitude. Seasons are caused by Earth’s tiltandEarth’s revolution around the sun. Seasons are NOT caused by earth’s distance from the sun.

  19. Test yourself…

  20. 1.Summer is the opposite of ____________ 2.Summer in the northern hemisphere starts on this date____________ 3.The first day of summer is the _______est day of the year 4.The first day of summer is also called the _______ _______

  21. 5.When it is summer in the northern hemisphere, it is ____________ in the southern hemisphere. 6.When it is summer in either hemisphere, the temperatures will be ___________. 7.When it is summer in the northern hemisphere, the north tilts ________ the sun.

  22. 8.Winter is the opposite of ____________ 9.Winter in the northern hemisphere starts on this date____________ 10.The first day of winter is the _______est day of the year 11.The first day of winter is also called the _______ _______

  23. 12.When it is winter in the northern hemisphere, it is ____________ in the southern hemisphere. 13.When it is winter in either hemisphere, the temperatures will be ___________. 14.When it is winter in the northern hemisphere, the north tilts ___________ the sun.

  24. 15.Spring is the opposite of ____________ 16.Spring in the northern hemisphere starts on this date____________ 17.On the first day of spring we have _____ hours of daylight. 18.The first day of spring is also called the _______ _______

  25. 19.When it is spring in the northern hemisphere, it is ____________ in the southern hemisphere. 20.When it is the 1st day of spring in either hemisphere, the sun shines directly over the ___________.

  26. What do you already know… about solstices? The “solstice” is the day of the year when sunlight is furthest north or south of the equator. Our summer solstice occurs on June 21st, the first day of summer. Our winter solstice occurs on December 21st, the first day of winter.

  27. Northern Summer Solstice

  28. Southern Summer Solstice

  29. What do you already know… about equinoxes? The “equinox” occurs twice a year when the sun is directly overhead at the equator. On the equinox, the hours of daylight equals the hours of darkness. Seasons in the northern & southern hemispheres are opposite.

  30. What do you already know… about equinoxes? The “equinox” occurs twice a year when the sun is directly overhead at the equator. Our vernalequinox occurs around March 21st, the first day of spring. Our autumnalequinox occurs around September 21st, the first day of fall.
