Physics Degrees in Higher Education • Bachelor of Science (BSc) Three-year honours degree Not necessarily going to enter a physics-related career • Master of Physics (MPhys or MSci) Four-year honours degree with greater breadth and depth, intending to become “professional” physicists. A good path is Mphys in UK, and then Ph.D. in USA. for Korean students

S1) LECTURES: core (8 hrs) + option (2 hrs) dynamics, maths, quantum mechanics and relativity, astronomy and cosmology LABORATORY: one-day block (5hrs) (eg. measuring the speed of light) includes some computing, electronics and group work WORKSHOP CLASSES: covers problem solving (2hrs) TUTORIALS (like private tutor): two per week (2hrs) Tip: Small group teaching is expensive but effective, make sure you get all TOTAL CONTACT HOURS: around 19 hours per week

Entry Requirements • Application is made through UCAS, University and Colleges Admission Service UCAS: Personal details, grade, personal statement, and recommendation letter • Most common entry is via A-levels Grades AAA−AAB, including physics and mathematics flexible attitude to the third subject (but not general studies) • International Students (not for Korean science high school students) Foundation Year (1 yr course) with grades AAA−AAB UCAS application English: TOEFL (540 paper based, 80 internet based, 207 computer based) or IELTS (6.0) • Plus Interview

Special Admission for Korean students from Science High School • Target: admission in September, 2009 • No requirement for Foundation Year ( 1 yr course) • English: fine as long as student pass it by May, 2009 :TOEFL (540 paper based, 80 internet based, 207 computer based) or IELTS (6.0) or any other comparable exam) • UCAS application + Interview: • Interview and grade are important factors • Interview: start with 3-4 minutes of personal introduction (similar to personal statement), then question about physics and mathematics problems • Apply it even if your grade is not good. We can accept all if you are above threshold.

Tuition, Accommodation and Scholarships • Tuition: £12k/yr (2300,0000 won) • Accommodation: ~£3k/yr • Scholarships • The Faculty of Engineering and Physical Science: 10 international students, £2k/yr • Physics Department: £1.5k (one time) for AAA level, 3 students out of 4 Korean science students got this award in 2008.
