Mohandas Gandhi • Background information: • Member of merchant class, lawyer • First experienced discrimination in Africa • 1906 - started his first non-violent campaign • 1914 - returned back to India, and later was a leader of Indian National Congress that worked for Indian independence using non-violent protests called passive resistance (like boycotting British goods and refusing to pay taxes) • Very well respected; many followers called him “Mahatma, “great soul”

  3. India in WWII • 1939 - entire Indian National Congress resigned because Britain claimed India was at war with Germany without India’s consent • 1942 - G.B. (needing India as a base for attacks against Japan) tried to negotiate independence, but the terms were for after the war • Both Gandhi and Muslim League rejected the proposal • Gandhi called for “quit India” movement, for immediate withdrawal of Great Britain

Indian Independence • Indian Muslims - wanted own country of Pakistan separate from India to protect Indian Muslims - led by Muhammad Ali Jinnah • August 15, 1947 - India and Pakistan were born independent of Great Britain, but violence broke out almost immediately on the border between the two as people were forced out of homes and killed • Gandhi was assassinated in 1948 by Hindu extremist who resented Gandhi’s tolerant attitude towards Muslims
