  4. A collection of hardware, software and data for capturing, managing, analyzing, and displaying geographically referenced information. WHAT IS GIS? Data Imagery Spreadsheets • With GIS you can link information to location data such as employees to addresses, property data to parcel information, and target customers to trade areas and consumer behavior. • You can layer and statistically analyze this information within a map to get a better understanding of how it all works together, and create different layer combinations and analysis based on what questions you need to answer. 5. GIS is most associated with maps, but this is a limited view. A GIS can be viewed 3 ways: WHAT IS GIS? • The DATABASE view – Fundamentally GIS is based on structured databases that describe and analyze content in geographic terms. • The MAP view – A GIS is a set of intelligent maps that show features/relationships. Maps can be used as windows into the databases to support queries, analysis, viewing, and editing of information. • The MODEL view – GIS is a set of data transformation tools that derive new datasets from existing datasets. In other words, by combining data and applying analytic functions / processes, you can create a model that helps answer questions you pose, and apply this model to multiple scenarios and locations. 6. WHAT IS GIS – The Bottom Line • GIS can provide much more than a simple location / area map. • GIS products are an extremely efficient way to visualize, analyze, and interpret data. • By communicating a large amount of information succinctly, GIS provides a powerful and complete story about how things are, and/or how they will be. • GIS can integrate and relate any data with a spatial component. 7. RESOURCES – COLLIERS GIS • Data: • Base Vector Data • Streets, cities, parks, hospitals… • Complete US coverage • Demographic Data • Census / census derived • Business summary – businesses, employees, sales • Consumer spending potential – demand • Segmentation • Complete US coverage Colliers GIS colliers.gis@colliers.com http://colliersteams.com/gis

  8. RESOURCES – COLLIERS GIS • Data: • Traffic Counts • Vintage varies • Imagery & Raster Data • Aerial Photography, source/vintage vary • Elevation & shaded relief • Other Data • LexisNexis / D&B • RL Brown, Hanley Wood • Colliers Research data • Public / For Sale GIS data • Client data Colliers GIS colliers.gis@colliers.com http://colliersteams.com/gis

  9. RESOURCES – COLLIERS GIS • Other Map Features: • Radius Rings • Drive Time Polygons • Geocoding Locations • By address or intersection • Building Photos • Other images or graphics (site plans) • Clip Regions • Transparencies Other Resources: • Demographic Reports • Anysite Online • Local Research or Colliers GIS • Google Earth / Google Maps projects Colliers GIS colliers.gis@colliers.com http://colliersteams.com/gis

  10. THE PROCESS • Plan ahead • Your GIS Specialist is an expert, a consultant….not a fast food order taker • What problem are you trying to solve? • What story are you trying to tell? • What data do you have? Does your client have? • What is the purpose of the map? • Ask for suggestions • Send us whatever data you can up front, in the proper format • Spreadsheets • GIS data – most formats can be imported • Photos, site plans, etc • Revisions are almost always part of the process Colliers GIS colliers.gis@colliers.com http://colliersteams.com/gis

  11. THE PROCESS • The proper format for table data: • K.I.S.S. - no stylized formatting, no photos • One row per record • Must have columns for address or intersection, city, state, and/or zip code. • Address / Intersection must have number, name, directional, and suffix • 4900 N 24th St • Not 4900 24th • Any other data in separate columns Colliers GIS colliers.gis@colliers.com http://colliersteams.com/gis

  12. THE PROCESS Resubmit if necessary Communicate the Request Recognize Need or Potential Draft Delivered Specs Defined Final Delivered Follow Up Submit Revisions Gather / prepare data Discuss purpose, client needs Mapper suggestions, brainstorm ideas Collaboration with mapper Time frame / scope within limitations / opportunities Case studies Communicate thoroughly Your feedback Review carefully Be as specific as possible Remote desktop sharing useful Turn-around times can vary Annual survey Monthly activity reports Typically electronic delivery Revisions take top priority Colliers GIS colliers.gis@colliers.com http://colliersteams.com/gis
