Why an Alternative Delivery Method? • Students around the world are learning via alternative delivery methods – primarily online • Online education has entered the mainstream • Institutions around the nation/world are involved • Prospects for future enrollment growth are significant – IF properly managed

The Extent of Online Learning in The U.S. • 65% of schools offering graduate face-to-face courses also offer graduate courses online. • 63% of schools offering undergraduate face-to face courses also offer undergraduate courses online. • Among all schools offering face-to-face master’s degree programs, 44% also offer master’s programs online. • The overall percent of schools identifying online education as a critical long-term strategy grew from 49% in 2003 to 72% in 2007.

  5. How Many Students are Learning Online? • For the past several years, online enrollments have been growing substantially faster that overall higher education enrolments. The expectation of academic leaders has been that theses enrollments would continue their substantial growth for at least another 5 years. • Almost 3.5 million students were taking at least one online course during the fall 2006 term; a nearly 10 percent increase over the previous year. • The 10% growth rate for online enrollment far exceeds the 1.5% growth of the overall higher education student population. • Nearly 20% of all U.S. higher education students were taking a least one online course in the fall of 2006. • The overall online enrollment growth rate is currently ten times that projected by the National Center for Educational Statistics for the general postsecondary student population.

Distance Education • Defined by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, The Commission on Colleges Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and the Western Interstate Commission on Higher Education: • “Distance education is defined, for the purposes of accreditation review, as a formal educational process in which the majority of the instruction occurs when student and instructor separated by time and/or space. Extended Education Review & Update • Extended education encompasses online, nontraditional formatted/delivered, and off-site education • Bush School’s current emphasis is on graduate credit certificate programs (12-15 credits) • Responsive to high demand of e-learning for convenient, anytime/anywhere, technology-mediated, graduate opportunities in key fields of strength for the Bush School • Expansion of the Office of Extended Education in 2007-08 to provide student support services (advising, admissions, registration, financial aid, etc.) and subject matter expert and faculty support services (contact preparation, technology support, teaching evaluations, administrative support, etc.) for experts and faculty located around the world) • Expansion of new marketing management strategies and business systems and processes • Program business model and financial plan dependent on self-supporting fees (current operation of $932,000 annually)
