  2. What is Authentic Leadership? Authentic: “not false or copied; genuine; real” • “The importance of being true to oneself as a leader” • Key takeaway: Be yourself • This new theory focuses on leaders dealing in a straightforward and honest way with followers.

What makes you an authentic leader? • Self Awareness- “Know Thyself” • Knowing own strengths, limitations, and values • Knowing what you stand for and feel is critical • Foundation in order to develop other components of authentic leadership • Relational Transparency- “Be Genuine” • Being honest and straightforward with others • Does not play games or has a “hidden agenda” • Balanced Processing- “Be Fair-Minded” • Solicits opposing viewpoints and considers all options before choosing course of action • Plans are well thought out and openly discussed • Internalized Moral Perspective- “Do the Right Thing” • Has ethical core- knows the right thing to do • Driven by concern for ethics and fairness
