  1. Winds of Prosperity: Technology Development and Diffusion of low cost Wind-mill solution for Salt Farming Innovators - Mohammad MehtarHussain and Mushtaq Ahmad

  2. The Honey Bee Network (HBN) The face less person gets an identity A face less person • links people with people helping in cross pollination of ideas • acknowledges knowledge holders • shares knowledge in local language • gives back a fair share of profit accrued if any

  3. Commitment to three basic principles: • the innovators should not become anonymous, their identity must be acknowledged and given due recognition, respect and reward b) what ever is learned from people must be shared back with them in their language and in the manner that they can understand c) if any income, wealth or monetary incentive is generated through diffusion of innovation or any other activity related to it, a fair part must be shared back with knowledge and insight provider

  4. 1988-89 Honey Bee Network 1993 Society for Research & Initiatives for Sustainable Technologies & Institutions (SRISTI) 1997 Grassroots Innovations Augmentation Network (GIAN) 2000 National Innovation Foundation – India (NIF)

  5. Uniform flow versus flow in spurts Is maximisation of output per unit of time always good?

  6. Incubation support • National Award by NIF-India in 4th Annual Award Function held on 11th February 2007 at New Delhi • Windmills installed at Little Rann of Kutch during the period 2008-2010 for demonstration and trial basis • Pilot project initiated with support of Alstom foundation, officially launched on 14th March 2011. • Collaboration with M/s Chaudhary Designers & Fabricators, manufacturers of Solar Water Heater and Solar distillation Units • Windmills at Kathivadar, Kadiyali & BheraiDevpara villages located nearer to Pipavav Port, Gujarat.

  7. Product development Original bamboo windmill 2009 2010 2009 2008

  8. Product details • Base structure, intermediate structure and head assembly (Rotor, crank and tail assembly). • Crank and connecting rod mechanism • Turbine blades are made of lightweight material and are given the proper angle so that the higher wind power can be harnessed and thereby can pump the water from greater depth. • Furling tail mechanism and manual brake system has been incorporated • This is very useful for pumping water up to the depth of 50 feet. The water discharge capacity is about 1200 -1500 lit / hr at wind speed of 10–12 km/hr. The performance may decrease while lifting water from depth more than 50 ft. • It can be fitted to a tube well or open well for light irrigation and potable water too.

  9. Product details

  10. Eco-system

  11. Benefits & way forward • Users who do not have diesel engine & used counterpoise and Users who used diesel engine for lifting water • Average savings: INR 15,000 – 30,000 • Average diesel savings: 300-400 litres • Sustainable?

  12. Chakardi Business model Financial of Chakardi Salt Business Proposed utilization of profits

  13. Current Initiatives • Collaboration with Tata Power Community Development Trust (TPCDT) to provide windmill as a potential water pumping technology to provide water for the local community in a fishing hamlet named Modhwa located in Kutch region. • Research initiative undergoing at IIT-Gandhinagar for developing power generation model.

  14. Learning's • Maximizing output per unit of time and smoothening the flow are not always sustainable • Mapping of need in the society and available technology • Product development process, on-field experiences and user’s inputs • Establishing an eco-system • Sustainable
