  8. Math • Math Facts • They do need to become fluent. Key to continued success in math • Either memorize or become very fast in calculating • 4+5 is like 5+5-1 • There are lots of ways to learn them. We will discuss more as the year progresses.

  10. Reading No set groups; flexible groups Whole class instruction with active learning Small groups of students working on specific strategies and skills. If your child can read at the 4th grade level, will I work with them on basic decoding? – no. Will I sometimes have them do shared reading with a classmate who is at a different level? – yes. When working on ways of engaging with a text or applying a strategy, I will be working with groups of students at different levels of reading fluency. Use the reading series, directed reading of children’s literature and non-fiction, read-alouds/teacher directed. Reading A to Z leveled readers; plus Making Connections (expository)

Matthew Effect Or why the rich get richer Average reading rate of a 2nd grader – approx. 75 wpm 20 minutes of reading each day does make a difference!! 20 minutes of reading a day 20 x 75 X 356 = 534,000 words in a year Our reader has improved her reading rate to 90 wpm 20 x 90 x 356 = 657,000 words in a year 5 minutes of reading a day 5 x 75 x 356 = 133,500 words in a year Our reader has improved her reading rate to 80 wpm 5 x 80 x 356 = 142,400 words in a year

  12. Just Right Books • Aim for no more than about 2 or 3 new words/page • Much more than that and the book is too difficult For an adult novel, that would be equivalent to not knowing 20+ words/page.Would you want to read a book in which there are 20+ words/page that you didn’t know?

  13. Just Right Books • Reading books beyond “Just Right Level” does not make better readers. • Develop bad habits that follow-through to upper grades and lead to reduced reading comprehension. Please consider content. Just because your eight-year old can read Lord of the Rings or The Diary of Anne Frank doesn’t mean they should.

  14. What should they read? Reluctant reader? • Try non-fiction • Many have text on multiple levels supplemented by great photos and illustrations Precocious reader? • Try books with old publication dates • Content tends to be more appropriate

Writing • We do lots of writing • Major Learning Goals • Great sentences • Proper punctuation in sentences • Able to organize thoughts in both narrative and expository writing • Poetry • 4-block method of proper paragraph formation • Quick-writes about literary analysis • Daily Updates • Book of Winston

Spelling • Spelling Practice • Write each word 3 times. • Write each word using one color for vowels and another color for consonants. • Write each word using a fancy style of writing. • Type each word on the computer or a texting phone. • Spell each word using your body to form each letter. • Spell each word out loud. Hop on both feet for each consonant and hop on one foot for each vowel. • Clap a rhythm while spelling each word aloud. Repeat. • Write each word once with your right hand and once with your left. • Try to make it fun

Morning Meetings • Monday, Wednesday, Friday; ten-ish minutes • One way we build a harmonious classroom community Character-developing issues covered: • Something special to share • Exploring an inspirational message • How to greet each other • Hopes for the day • Good wishes for someone • Prayer for someone • Compliment for someone • Silly song or game • Relaxation techniques • Conflict resolution skills • Whatever I (or they) dream up!

I will listen to what you have to say.  I want to understand how you feel, but I think we need an adult to help us solve this. I feel too upset to talk about this right now. Can we try again later? Mind Up Curriculum Teach children about the connection between their thinking brain and their emotional brain Strategies for helping students focus their attention, improve their self-regulation skills, build resilience to stress, and develop a positive mind-set in both school and life.  Breathing for relaxation, brain anatomy and function, calming/focusing techniques

  21. Homework Packet goes home on Monday to be returned on Friday. Work should be spread out throughout the week. Several Goals: • Additional practice • Reinforce new learning and skills • Provide opportunity to expand on/go deeper into an activity • Develop self-sufficiency in a task • Provide home/school connection • Teach personal responsibility Regular features: • Poetry journal • Reading log All homework should meet at least one of these goals

  23. Critters, illness and friendship issues Lice – Pillows, Winston, Long hair, try not to panic! Please keep sick children home. Don’t stress over missed class work. I will work with you and your child. I care about your children’s friendships. I make it a point to be present at some of the recesses as an observer.
