Present status of dugongs in Sri Lanka Indiscriminate fishing practices – a case report (December 22, 2010) • The Sri Lankan Navy came across two carcasses of this rare marine mammal in possession of fisherman's in Mannar. • They have arrested the fishermen and handed over to the police. • The National Aquatic Resources Research & Development Agency (NARA) was called in for technical assistance and expertise for further investigation. It was suspected that the Dugongs were killed as a result of a dynamite blast usually used to catch fish.

  3. Present status of dugongs in Sri Lanka • The only places where Dugongs have been recorded so far in Sri Lanka are the Puttlam lagoon (Kalpitiya) and the Gulf of Mannar of the north western coast of Sri Lanka. • According to the current status of Dugongs these places are believed to be few of the rare spots where this elusive species is found today. Activities were designed based on the results of the Socio-economic and Habitat assessment surveys conducted in six selected villages in project area Habitat types identified Major issues identified • Overfishing • Destructive fishing practises • Constructions • Marine debris • Discharge of household sewage • Ad hoc fish landing sites • Open ocean • Lagoon • Mangroves • Coral reefs • Sea grass meadows • Salt marshes • Mud flats • Grasslands
