  2. War strategy against was Japan was called Island Hopping- capturing some Japanese-held islands and ignoring others in a steady path toward Japan.

  3. Kamikaze- suicde missions used Japanese. They crashed their planes into American ships

  4. Japan is Defeated • President Roosevelt died -1 mo b4 Germany defeated. VP Harry S. Truman became Pres. • Invaded Iwo Jima so we could bomb Japanese mainland • 60,000 Marines invaded Iwo Jima, lost 6,800 taking the island

  5. U.S. began dropping Napalm-jellied gasoline they exploded and lit fires. Fire bombed Tokyo killed 80,000 and destroyed 250,000 buildings We fire bombed six of Japan’s most important industrial cities Immense loss of life and No surrender

  6. Okinawa- island 350 miles from Japan was invaded U.S. lost 12,000 men. Island would serve as a staging area for the invasion of Japan. Japanese would not surrender had to kill them all. Invasion of main land would cost millions of lives on both sides.

  7. Manhattan Project- code name for the program that built the atomic bomb. Program was led by Gen. Leslie Groves and physicist Robert Oppenheimer. • Truman felt it was his duty to use every weapon available to save American lives • Allies threatened Japan with “utter destruction” wanted them to surrender

  8. August 6, 1945 used A-bomb on Hiroshima killed thousands instantly many thousands more died later from radiation sickness. August 9, 1945 bombed Nagasaki killed 75,000 August 15, 1945 Japan surrendered
