defense mechanisms – “are psychological strategies brought into play by individuals, groups and even nations to cope with reality and to maintain self-image.” • Simple terms, ways to protect the ego from outside influences • Often referred to as a coping mechanism • Everybody uses defense mechanisms, but… • Four levels of defense mechanism, one being not so good, four being pretty normal
Level 2 Defense Mechanisms • Obviously aren’t as bad as Level 1, but can be a real problem in excess
Level 3! • Not as maladaptive as 2, everyone to some extent uses these defense mechanisms
Level 4 – Defense Mechanisms • commonly found among emotionally healthy adults and are considered the most mature
