  3. Introduction • According to the ‘love2read’ website • Just under half (46%) of all Australians have trouble: • reading newspapers • following a recipe • make sense of timetables • understanding the instructions on a medicine bottle

Introduction • Love2read – 3 main goals to forge a nation of readers • To promote a reading culture in every home • To establish an aspirational goal for families, of parents and caregivers sharing books with their children every day • For all Australians to understand the benefits of reading as a life skill and a catalyst for well-being

  5. Introduction • Who we are! • Primary School • Small student body • Each year level is represented once • 30% ESL students • Emphasis by teachers to improve literacy for all students

  6. ESL Students • English as a second language (ESL) • 30% of our primary school are ESL students! • Need to promote the importance of reading English books to establish: • Increase knowledge and wellbeing • Increase literacy skills • Opportunity to be powerfully literate

  7. Contemporary Model of Reading • Four Roles / Resources of the Successful Reader (MyRead website) • Text participants – Make meaning • Text user – know that • Code breaker – Understand • Text Analyst – Is aware/identify how

  8. National Year of Reading • 2012 National Year of Reading in Australia • Strong emphasis to improve reading standards in Australia

United Nations Year of Cooperatives • What is a cooperative? • Business owned and run by and for their members • Equal say in what the business does • Share in the profits • Driven by values rather than profits • Building a better world • Our cooperative is a vegetable garden called “proud of our patch”

Proud of our Patch • School will need to establish the vegie patch • Network with the community business such as Bunnings • Seek donations from parents (not necessary money, seeds, labour) • Students to have direct input into which vegetables to plant. • Each class will be on a roster – weekly? • Duties will include • maintain • harvesting • monitoring and upkeep

  11. Proud of our Patch • What to do with our Vegetables? • Sell to parents • Sell to neighbouring High School - Home Economic classes • Profits used to purchase seeds and upkeep the patch

  12. Proud of our Patch • How does this tie in with the National Year of Reading? • Students will be encourage to read text books themed on • Vegetables / Food • Sustainability / Environment • Non fiction and fictional texts

Proud of our Patch • Journal or Diary • Students will be required to keep a journal of their experiences revolving around the patch. • Write a story about the patch. • Illustrate their story • Students should be encourage to share their stories with their peers • Exhibition to display the students stories.

Australian Curriculum Phase 1 - English • Focusing on The National Year of Reading. • The Australian Curriculum Leaning Area will be English • The Year one area of learning will be • ACELA1451 – identify parts of a simple sentence • ACELY1661 – create imaginative and informative text showing text structure, word choice, spelling and multimodal elements • ACELY1656 - engage in conversation/discussions, showing interest and asking questions. • ACELY1658 - Describe some differences between imaginative informative and persuasive texts

Linkages • ACELA1451 – identify parts of a simple sentence • Students to learn the steps involved to grow vegetables – planting a seed, watering, mulching, harvesting • ACELY1661 – create imaginative and informative text showing text structure, word choice, spelling and multimodal elements • Students to keep a diary /journal • Learning from their experiences • Writing a short story and create an illustrate of the “patch” • ACELY1656 - engage in conversation/discussions, showing interest and asking questions • Students will have input into which vegetables to grow. • Hopefully enthusiastic about the prospect of seeing where vegetables come from ACELY1658 - Describe some differences between imaginative informative and persuasive texts • Students will read and discus a mixture of fictional and non fiction text.

  20. Powerfully Literate • While working on “the patch” students will • Discuss, • research, • Understand critical concepts, • Use imagination, • Listen and talk.

Promotion of NYR in our school • Exhibition - school community invited to view children’s work • Internal reward for creative story about each patch • Hopefully the cooperative program “Proud of our Patch” will inspire students to read books and learn about sustainability • Newsletter – emphasis on reading • Students encouraged to read books to their parents • Open reading session in the library during lunch time for students to come and read
