Over500PeopleAttendedthe2ndAnnual CIG InsuranceCommunitySafetySaturday™heldonSeptember6,2014,inMonterey, California Thecommunityeventwas partlearning,part fun,withlots ofsafety information for everyone.Monterey,CA,September 16,2014–CIGInsurance’s 2ndAnnualCIGCommunitySafety Saturday™washeldonSeptember6,2014at Capital InsuranceGroup’scorporateheadquarterslocated at2300GardenRoadinMonterey.Thefree,family-friendlyevent attracted morethan 500attendees. Children,teensand adultsalikereceivedawealthofsafety-related information and resourcesfrom30local,regional,and national organizations. CapitalInsuranceGroup® (CIG)established thesepopularfamilyand communityeventsin2010and hasheldCommunitySafetySaturdayeventsthroughoutCaliforniaandNevada.Duringthe OpeningCeremony, CIG and MarcKlaaswerehonored withCertificatesofRecognitionfromUnitedStatesCongressmanSamFarrandCaliforniaSenatorBill Monning. CIG alsoreceivedaProclamationfrom theCityofMontereyand Certificateswerepresentedfromthe citiesofSeaside,Marinaand Sand City.SeasideMayorRalphRubioandDel ReyOaksMayorJerry Edelenspoke about theimportanceof theevent tothecommunityand thanked all theparticipants,especiallyfirst responders. Proudlysponsored byKIONNewsChannel5and Telemundo,theevent was part learning,partfun, withlotsofsafety informationforeveryone. Childrendelightedinwatching thefamous dog, “WhiskietheWhaleSpotter”™perform whaletricksasthey listened toPeggyStapofMarineLifeStudies talkabout safetyonand around thewater.Abigcrowd watched theexciting “JawsofLife”demonstration, whichincluded life-saving toolsand equipment used byfirst responders.Parents and teensmetwithKathyandFred Forgnone,parentswholost theirdaughterinacarcrash,and OfficerJaime Riosfromthe CHP tolearnabout theStartSmartTeenDriving EducationProgram.

Walt Bennett,CIG VicePresident ofUnderwriting &Actuaryexplains,“Weareabsolutelydelightedattheturnout.Themore wecanexposeourcommunity to all thesafetyand securityresourcesthatarepubliclyavailable,thegreaterthechancesarethattragediescanbeaverted–oratleastwecaneasesomeone’ssufferingwhensomething doesoccur.At CIG,wearecommitted toimproving thequalityof lifeinthosecommunitieswherewedobusiness.” • Morechildrenwill ridesafelythankstothechild car-seatinspections. • Thechild car-seatsafetyinspectionstationwasoperated bythe California HighwayPatrol Office–MercedCounty.Experttechnicianschecked 50vehiclesforproperinstallationand found an83%rateofmisuse.They gaveparentsand caregiverscriticalinformationabout installingcarseats correctlyfortheirparticularchild and vehicle. CaliforniaLawrestrictswhereand howachild may occupyavehicle,basedonthechild’sageand height. Theyalsoeducated parentsonthedangers of leavingchildreninahotcar. • Over200childrenwerefingerprinted attheKlaasKidsFoundationPrint-A-Thon. • TheKlaasKidsFoundation Print-A-Thonwasoffered attheevent,providingfreechildidentificationtools including digital fingerprinting,photoIDs,take-homeDNAkits,and more.MarcKlaasreports,“Wehavefacilitated Print-A-ThoneventsthroughouttheUnitedStatesfor almost 20yearswithavarietyofcommunity-mindedsponsors,and thiseventisahugesuccess–weservedover200children!” • Specialcrowd-pleasingpresentations included: • JawsofLifeDemonstrationprovided bytheMontereyFireDepartment who alsobrought their55’ladderfireengineforkidsto climb. • WhiskietheWhaleSpotter™,thefamousrescuedog fromMarineLifeStudies,performed herwhaletricksand showed attendeeshowshe spotswhalesfromMarineLifeStudies’researchboatintheMontereyBayNationalSanctuary. Theyalsosharedinformationabout protecting whales,dolphinsand othermarinewildlifeandobserving themsafelyinthewild. • Additionally, CIGCommunitySafetySaturday featuredthe followingattractions: • MontereyCountySheriff’sOffice–Coastal StationMontereybroughtcrimepreventionhandouts aswell astheirK-9,SWAT Team,and Searchand Rescuevehicleswhichattendeesenjoyedviewing.Theyalsodid “meet and greets”withtheirK-9dog. • MontereyCountyCrimePrevention OfficersAssociationprovided safetybrochures. • AmericanRedCross–MontereyBayAreaChaptergaveout FamilyDisasterPlans.AttendeestestedtheirknowledgeofDisasterReadinessandwonprizeswhentheyspunthe“WheelofPreparedness”. • MADD(MothersAgainst DrunkDriving)brought theirimpactful “crashcar”andprovidedhandoutsaboutthedangersofdrinking and driving. • TheU.S.Coast Guard brought their29’fastboatfortoursand theU.S.Coast GuardAuxiliary • provided water,boatingandenvironmentalprotectioninformation.AuxttertheSeaOttermascotwasalsoonhand. • CaliforniaGovernor’sOfficeofEmergencyServicesprovided educational materialsabout howtoprepareforearthquakesandtsunamis. • MontereyCountyOfficeofEmergencyServicesbroughtemergencypreparednessinformation. • BoyScoutsofAmerica–SiliconValleyMontereyBayCouncilprovidedemergencysurvivalandsafetytips. • Girl ScoutsofCalifornia’sCentral Coastgaveoutsafetyinformation. • Independent TransportationNetworkofMontereyCountybroughtinformationabout itsorganizationthatoffersridestoseniorsand thevisuallyimpaired inMontereyCounty, California. •United WayMontereyCountyhadaninformation boothincluding handoutsabout the2-1-1
